Brackets:
The girls bracket will be published again since it has some kinks in it, but all of the information is there.
Coaches are filing into the Sullivan Center at Iolani, they get down to business at 1 p.m. I am not going to quote coaches as they fight for their wrestlers, but I will be updating seeds as they are determined and pointing out when spots are contested.
Not quite what sure to expect, but if Joshua Terao, above, draws any discussion it will most certainly be raves and nothing but. That is one freaky pin he put on Crimmins yesterday.
Four champs go first, followed by runner up and third place and so on. In the event of a tie in votes, cards will be drawn.
This goes kind of fast when it is clear-cut, I am going to try to get top 10 in here at least. Obviously, these are not official until the HHSAA released them. I will definitely get the top four.
Boys 106
Cameron Kato is the first name mentioned. Kapolei contests it, Pagurayan is 1-1 against Kato. It goes to a vote. ILH wins the vote 3-1, Kato is the top seed.

OIA vs. ILH again this time for the top seed, but MIL wants it as well. Ilabon comes up as a common opponent, they both beat him. vote: OIA 1, Maui 3. Brad Transfiguration of the Big Island gets in as an alternate but avoids the top three seeds. He will face NO. 4 Spain in the first round. Coaches don’t like the OIA’s fifth having a tougher road, theoretically, than the OIA six.

ILH wants to go back and revist their second place vs. Maui’s.second place. OIA says he has no problem with rethinking it, it went pretty fast. ILH closes it after it is pointed out there kid has not been at states.

Jaramillo gets it for a head-to-head win over Hernandez. Right now all four seeds get a bye in the first round, but rules say they can’t. Each quarter will have a bye. Coaches question it, but it’s the rules. The reasoning is that a team with a great wrestler should not be robbed of a chance to get team points for a pin. So the byes have to be random throughout via a card draw. They are going to have to redo the whole bracket after they draw the byes.
After four straight card draws, the top seeds get the bye all four times.

Where is Ng at in the 113 bracket?
Why is Saribay ahead of Nakama?
who is Jamin Lopez? not from kapolei…if nakama is from kapolei…
I see, seems like they are flipping 3/4 to protect the seeds better.
I don’t think it matters unless they changed the format. Even though they are specific seeds, they will be slotted in their appropriate quarter and half brackets
How does khiem get it wen Williams beat him head to head.
I guess higher state placer from last yr, is higher tie breaker than head to head
Where is Ikei #113 Kaiser?
players history wasn’t given to OIA league rep. so williams gets #2.
Where is Maui Lee from PC?
Sorry, lowkey, I was new at this and didn’t catch it. We are through the boys, I am sure the HHSAA will release it in a few hours.
Kauai kid. Kauai seems to always get No. 5, I am not as familiar with them.
Sorry, That one flew by as I acclimated myself.
Looks like people might be reading this, though, so that’s good.
OK, so these aren’t traditional seedlings he’s posting. The wrestlers that are league champs are seeded. Everyone else is placed according to placement of their league champ.
Every single time that Saribay has gone against Nakama, Nakama always won. Why is Saribay ahead of him?
Yup, unless they changed format
Read my previous post anon. Talked to a league rep and that’s what they said. Less a seeding meeting more a placement meeting after the top 5.
Haha, so I guess I picked the wrong year to come. It is still kind of interesting.
No, Jerry its always like this. Just keep the info flowing. Lets here the arguments that support wrestlers if at all possible.
Correa not Top 10 at 145? Whats the reasoning behind that? Yoshikawa took 3rd at ILH and is ranked.
I will try, it almost never proceeds past head to head and state. Hard to figure out who they are taking about.
Maybe next year try to get a coach come and sit with you as a translator.
I had Kawachi here, but he ran to the front of the room where he could see. I am not sure it would matter, the brackets change so fast I can’t even really listen. I just want to make the info right.
They really need to change the seeding format. The whole purpose to create some sense of fairness and to have a balance between the top half and bottom half and then even down to the quarters. Just looked at the 106 as an example. Only Cameron Kato (#2 rank) and Shazer Valerano (#5 rank) are there. Bottom side is packed with Pagurayan (#1 rank), Cabanban (#3 rank), Domingo (#4 rank), Watase (#6 rank). One of those will be eliminated from medal contention because of seeding as they will meet each other on the backside after quarters. How is Bird the number 5 seed he’s never beaten Cabanban or Watase, did not place a the Officials. Is the BIIF champ any good? Just as well the pull numbers out of a hat.
missing alot of people in alot of different weight classes. Is this accurate information?
Yes, these are just the seeds. If they are not listed, they are probably seeded 13-16 to keep them away from a wrestler from their same league.
can you post the brackets when HHSAA releases them? thanks for the updates
Yep, I will put them on the top of this post when they are released.
You made history, Jerry!
When do you think brackets will be posted by?
any news on the brackets yet?
No news, probably by 8 though. I will email them to find out. I call them so much, I don’t like bothering them on a Sunday.
Mika, I don’t know if it is fair or not, but I do know there is a process. They go through one round of league champions for the top five seeds, then another round for league runners up and continue it until they have a complete bracket. Then they look at their work and often say ‘that’s not fair,’ or ‘we can’t have the BIIF 2 vs. 3 in the second round, we have to reshuffle.’
Added brackets.
Ng. is in Wigzell’s quarter.
After 8 (half the bracket) they are not really rankings. So 9 and 10 are just slots that I left in there because I could.
Great Job Jerry! You really have done right by our sport. Huge Mahalo from Maui.
so they seed the top 8 then the rest of the bracket is basically a random assignment?
also….who is in the meeting? I’m interested in know how the leagues or schools are represented. Can’t imagine every school with a kid in the tournament (or a particular bracket) gets a seat at the table.
Just curious are there known times/schedule for both days?
Not exactly random, fan, nothing that goes on there is random. Really, everything is thought out. But they will switch opponents from 9-16 to make things more fair or to keep two kids out of the same quarter if they are from the same league.
There are five voters, one from each league, except Kauai sends its instructions by email rather than attend. Usually, the head coach for the team champion represents its entire league, so you have the Campbell coaches arguing for say, a Kapolei kid. They seem to do a good job of it, but I am not familiar with it enough to say they are or aren’t.
I am writing a boring story about it for tomorrow’s paper.
TJ, time schedules can be found at sportshigh.com. If they are not, I will post them here tonight or tomorrow.
Thanks for nothing Jerry. You were building a lot of support for the work that you are doing until you put “I am writing a boring story about it for tomorrow’s paper.”

Oh, believe me, left, it is more boring than I wanted it to be.
You win some, you lose some.
The meaning of boring is like the meaning of Beetlejuice, it won’t come true unless you say it is so.
Anything can be interesting with the right angle.
I’m with you there, Lefty, just lacked the skills on this one. We’ll see tomorrow.
The Team Championship title is wrapped already. Congrats to Lahaina with your 11 placers, the first ever outer island team to win a title! You guys wrestled all summer and did it for Chanse.
The OIA is led by Campbell with 7 placers.
