Tanoa Scanlan scored 22 points as No. 3-ranked Punahou outlasted No. 5 Kailua, 62-57, in overtime to captured the Surfrider Holiday Classic championship on Saturday night.
Ethan Chung added 13 points and Zion White tallied 10 for Punahou (6-1). White’s assist to Dane Kellner for a layup gave the visitors the lead for good, 59-57, and he followed that with a block on Maddox Pung.
“We’re getting better, especially on the defensive end. We’ve got a long way to go. I think we’re 65, 70 percent of where we want to be,” Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said. “This is a really young team. We’re starting two sophomores, two juniors and a senior. The meshing is good. Guys get along real well. Real good chemistry and everyone pulls for each other. That’s a winning formula. Now we’ve got to refine our execution, attention to detail.”
Nainoa Hirasuma-Kenny led Kailua (8-3) with 14 points, drilling four 3-pointers. Dylan Kunz added 12 on four 3-pointers, and Pung finished with 11, including three treys.
The Surfriders are without longtime All-State center Noa Donnelly, who graduated. They posted wins over Saint Louis I-AA and No. 10 ‘Iolani en route to the final.
“We battled back on Thursday night against Saint Louis I-AA. They’ve got some good size. Finally, we woke up against ‘Iolani, a quicker team. I thought we did a pretty good job rebounding tonight. We’ve got offensive guys and our defense played pretty well the last three nights, but we didn’t fold when we fell behind by 12. We battled back and we had a chance to win.”
Leading 29-27 at the half, the visitors went on a 12-2 run. Scanlan’s three-point play in the paint opened the lead to 41-29.
Kailua then went on a 23-11 run while Punahou stopped feeding the low-post scoring machine, Scanlan. Kunz’s 25-foot trey from the left wing gave the home team a 52-50 lead with 2:18 remaining.
Kailua’s Tyler Parker grabbed an offensive rebound on a missed 3 by Pung, but missed the putback with 31.5 seconds left. Scanlan drove from the top for a layup, tying the game at 52 with 22 seconds left.
Kailua’s potential game-winning shot was a fadeaway airball and the game went into overtime.
Chung’s 3 opened the lead to 57-54, but Parker matched it seconds later to tie the game. White drove into the lane and fed Kellner for a layup and a 59-57 edge.
Kellner, Scanlan and Chung sank free throws to open a 62-57 lead.
