Theresa Anakalea is on a rampage.
The Damien guard opened the Pa‘ani Tournament at Punahou with a 27-point game in the Monarchs’ 80-24 win over Hilo on Wednesday. On Thursday, the senior pumped in 32 points in Damien’s 51-29 win over Leilehua.
Damien is now 4-0 in nonconference play. Anakalea scored 26 points in a season-opening 64-42 win over Kauai, then had 16 in a 50-48 squeaker over Kapaa. She isn’t a one-woman team. Tiare Arquero and Kenna Wengler are scorers and playmakers. Post Shastyne Selesele is a force in the paint.
Next up is Mid-Pacific, which lost to Moanalua, 36-21, then beat Punahou I-AA, 34-29, at the tourney. Damien’s final game in the event is on Saturday morning against unbeaten Esperanza (Calif.), which beat host Punahou, 47-39, and Moanalua, 48-33.
Esperanza’s crafty point guard, Kaiya Mack, has scored 23 points in each of the Aztecs’ tourney games. Esperanza arrived on Wednesday at 3 p.m., then got on the court a few hours later, coach Jimmy Valverde said.
