Junior guard Pua‘ena Herrington scored all 27 points in the first three quarters and No. 3-ranked Maryknoll saw its 23-point lead melt down to eight in the final minute for a 62-52 win over King’s High (Seattle, Wash.) on Thursday night at the HBA Invitational.
Senior point guard Hailey Perez tallied 12 points, including two key free throws with 49 seconds left after the Knights had cut a 60-37 deficit to 60-52. Skylyn Moore added 11 points and four steals. Zoe Silva had a team-high eight rebounds for Maryknoll (10-4).
Standout guard Kaleo Anderson led King’s (5-3) with 28 points on 8-for-17 shooting from the field. Maryknoll’s matchup zone kept a lid on the 6-foot junior until the final quarter, when she poured in 10 points to spark the Knights’ rally.
Senior forward Cat Ellard had nine points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Molly Kyler tallied eight points.
The visitors had four turnovers in the first quarter and were down 15-13 before Moore went coast to coast on a steal for a layup to beat the buzzer. Then came seven giveaways against Maryknoll’s zone in the second quarter, but the margin was still close. Maryknoll led 34-29 at the half.
The Spartans opened the second half with a quick 13-5 run. Rebekah Lum Kee drilled a wing 3, Moore scored off another steal, Herrington stole the ball and hit a 10-foot jumper in the paint, and after Perez splashed a 23-footer from the top, Maryknoll led 47-34.
Herrington shot 5-for-6 in the opening quarter, but struggled at times after that with layups and Euro-step moves in transition. She finished the game 12-for-29 from the field, adding six steals, four rebounds and three assists.
The game was delayed with 39 seconds left as officials conferred with the site manager about hostility between a few spectators in the bleachers. The game was resumed roughly five minutes later.
King’s High ranked No. 5 among Washington state’s 1A programs by MaxPreps. The Knights have won two 2A and two 1A state championships dating back to 1996-97.
