No. 1 Kamehameha routs Bakersfield Christian to open Showcase

All they wanted was a chance to fill a void in the schedule.

Kamehameha, ‘Iolani and Punahou are getting all they wanted and more. No. 1-ranked

Kamehameha opened the inaugural Honolulu Hoops Showcase with a 65-34 win over Bakersfield Christian (Calif.) on Thursday at ‘Iolani. Center Nihoa Dunn dominated with 18 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field. The 6-foot-1 junior also hauled down 10 rebounds.


Makenzie Alapai added 14 points on 5-for-7 field-goal shooting.

Ruby Yanagi had 11 points, including 7-for-8 from the free-throw line, and Kalaya Miller tallied 10 points for the Eagles (4-11).

Kamehameha is 17-3 overall and 4-0 in ILH play. The gap in the schedule led coaches to connect with former Kamehameha player George Courtney of GC3 Hoops. Courtney is based in Arizona coordinated the tourney, much like he helped get the I Mua Invitational’s mainland teams to the islands in preseason.

Estrella Foothills (Goodyear, Ariz.) 58, No. 8 Punahou 55

Evan Amenhauser poured in 22 points, Cyan Yellowman scored 15 and Nemo Sidhu tallied 14 as the Wolves survived a fierce rally by the Buffanblu.

Estrella Foothills (19-1) is ranked No. 58 in Arizona by MaxPreps.


Ahnastaziah Wright led Punahou (10-10) with 17 points. Jaedyn Koshiba tallied 15 points.

Salpointe Catholic (Tucson, Ariz.) 56, @ No. 4 ‘Iolani 51

The Lancers (11-3), ranked No. 6 in Arizona by MaxPreps, got 15 points from Allison Even and 12 from Sidney Anderson 12 for the close win over host ‘Iolani.

Rayah Soriano splashed four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for ‘Iolani (16-6). Justice Kekauoha added 12 points.

Schedule
The tourney moves to Punahou on Friday, then Kamehameha Saturday.
