APRIL 15, 1987: Villarmias take Aiea to first OIA West title

It took more than a sister act for Aiea to win its first OIA West championship in girls basketball.

On this day in 1987, Fran Villarmia and Nadine Villarmia combined to score 18 points and Jann Merseberg added 16 as Aiea beat Waipahu 48-41 to win its first division title.

Na Alii are still looking for their first OIA championship after Farrington took it in in Fran Villamia’s senior year thanks to a 25-23 win.


Aiea ended up the top OIA team a the state tournament, though, finishing third in the school’s first appearance in the big dance. Na Alii made it all the way to the semifinals after beating Waimea and Lahainaluna but lost to eventual champion Iolani.


Aiea did earn a measure of revenge against the OIA champions in the consolation round, beating Farrington 43-40.


Fran Villarmia led Aiea to its only state title as the coach in 2001.
