These press conferences are great for media in one sense: everybody gets a chance to talk to the high school coach of their choice. Of course, we’re talking coaches of teams that have made it this far.
The first presser comes before the opening round of the state tourney. That’s borderline madhouse since there are six teams in Division I and six teams in D-II, and tracking down all 12 coaches is nearly impossible in a limited amount of time. Yes, they’ve got places to go and things to do.
It’s not as chaotic in the second presser, which was held by the HHSAA on Tuesday morning. It’s the final two for each division. It’s not a scenario I depend on; interviewing coaches for preview stories and blog posts happens more over the phone or in person at practice, the latter being fairly rare. But this early in the week, I couldn’t help asking both Punahou coach Kale Ane and Mililani coach Rod York about the much-anticipated matchup this Friday.
Two potent offenses. Playmaking defenses. And a whole lot of chess moves ahead.
More coming this week in the Star-Advertiser and your friendly, neighborhood Hawaii Prep World blog.
