Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is about to start his junior season as Saint Louis’ starter, and fans can get an early look Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when the Crusaders visit Kapolei for a scrimmage.
But he will not be the only Tagovailoa on the field. His brother, Taulia Tagovailoa, is a freshman quarterback for the Hurricanes, and their father, Galu Tagovailoa, is a Kapolei assistant.
“I don’t think Taulia’s a starter,” Tua told Hawaii Prep World at Saint Louis’ practice on Wednesday. “Yeah, I’ll probably talk to him and wish him luck. Tell him that it’s his first year on the varsity and to stick to what the coaches are telling him.”
Unlike Tua, who is a southpaw, Taulia is a righty.
“He’s probably going to be bigger than me (eventually),” Tua added about his brother.
Tua, who already has 15 FBS Division I scholarship offers, is 6 feet 1, 210 pounds and he said Taulia is 5-11, 195.
Tua, who is a dual threat as a passer and a runner, said Taulia “is not much of a runner.”
A year ago, Tua passed for 2,571 yards and 33 touchdowns and rushed for 553 yards and eight TDs. Saint Louis finished the season 6-4, losing to Punahou 35-28 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title game.
Kapolei went 5-4 in 2014 and reached the OIA quarterfinals, where it lost 9-0 to Kahuku.
The Hurricanes scrimmage at Castle on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. before hosting Kaiser on Aug. 7 in the regular-season opener.
The Crusaders scrimmage at Mililani on Aug. 8 and won’t be in action again until they host Liberty (Nev.) on Aug. 28 at Aloha Stadium.
