Saint Louis to play Bishop Gorman in August

Set your calendars for a big show.

On Aug. 31, Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas will visit Honolulu to play two-time defending state champion Saint Louis at Aloha Stadium, according to Crusaders coach Cal Lee.

Lee worked out the details of the contest with Chris Brown, the former All-WAC performer for the University of Hawaii who is now an assistant with the Gaels.

Under coach Kenny Sanchez, Bishop Gorman won national high school championships in 2015 and 2016. The Gaels also won a national title under Tony Sanchez in 2014.

Mater Dei snapped Bishop Gorman’s 55-game winning streak on the way to a national title in 2017. The Gaels finished 13-2 and won the Nevada 4A state championship.

Saint Louis finished 10-0 last year and won the Hawaii Open Division state final, 31-28 over Kahuku. The Crusaders have won their last 15 games overall.

Saint Louis last played Bishop Gorman in 2012, losing 52-40 at Aloha Stadium. Running back Adam Noga rushed for 201 yards and two touchdowns but the Crusaders couldn’t contain Gaels quarterback Anu Solomon, who threw for 206 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another score.

Bishop Gorman beat Kahuku, 35-7, in Las Vegas in 2016.

Saint Louis is 16-5-1 against mainland schools since 1966.

Wow, the ILH let alone STL dont do anything unless its to their advantage!
    #homefield
    #homerefs

Remember in 2015 after Kahuku beat STL in the title game, Cal went on camera to lobby for an OIA/ILH merger with the excuse that “..oh, we are not used to playing smash mouth teams, it would be nice to play Kahuku during the regular season to get used to their style”.

…so in 2019 the merger came to fruition. Wow! King of negotiating and close door meetings!

Have to agree with Awrite… Kahuku not afraid to play against the top mainland teams off Hawai’i soil… you bring bishop Gorman to north shore. Guarantee different story…

  3. Knight Marcher February 13, 2018 5:26 pm

Then they should fly up to Cali and play Mater Dei….Now that would be something…But like the previous comments, there’s some of us know it’s all a Big Sham how the Politics in the High school Sports always leans towards the benefit of the ILH..Oh well, it is what it is….

  4. SupportAllHawaii February 13, 2018 5:34 pm

It’s comments like above that are the biggest problems with Hawai’i high school sports. Instead of rooting for team that will represent Hawaii, these guys find all the negatives of St Louis framed in their own biases.

Fact, when Cal Lee talked about a merger the OIÁ shut it down that season. The article that was recently released specifically noted that this merger was suggested by the OIA. And don’t bring up Kahuku not being afraid to play off Hawaii soil, cause let’s be honest they haven’t won anything against mainland teams.

  5. Kanalui08 February 13, 2018 6:13 pm

you guys do know that Saint Louis cannot leave the state to play mainland teams because of the whole meltdown in player discipline back in the 90s when they last went to Vegas right? so you guys crying about saint louis wanting homefield advantage is ridiculous. the boys would love to travel to the mainland but they are forbidden by the school to ever leave the state. it was a miracle they let the boys off island just to go to maui to play baldwin.

  6. Knation February 13, 2018 6:14 pm

@supportallhawaii kahuku played three power house teams from mainland on the mainland. Kahuku did lose to these teams but atleast we went there to represent Hawaii high school football.

  7. Knation February 13, 2018 6:16 pm

@knight marcher so true! It is what it is…

  8. Knation February 13, 2018 6:17 pm

Go crusaders tho!!! Hope they pull it off

  9. Footaballah February 13, 2018 6:22 pm

Its funny how Knation and others use the word “We.” I’m pretty sure “You” never played a down in your life. Both teams Stl and Kah have proved their worth through the years. You and every other pathetic person brining down the game should be ashamed. Keeping yapping from sidelines buddy.

  10. Footaballah February 13, 2018 6:29 pm

Awrite!! If you believe the top Hawaii teams shouldn’t play eachother in the regular season then you’re an idiot. In your head you probably like watching a game where the score is 52-0. You and your dumb crew cheering, “yeah bah, we went smash ‘em.” Get Real! Also, Cal Lee himself can’t make that happen on his own. If you think he can all by himself, again, you’re an idiot. You might be right. The Brotherhood is strong, but more importantly, they got a brain. Hopefully you learned something.

  11. Deuche February 13, 2018 6:52 pm

@supportAllHawaii, Do us all a favor and Google the meaning of “contradicting”. It might help the next time you want to comment.

Is it football season already? This fwam is crying. Get over it!!!! HAHAHAHAHA

  13. Recruit dis February 13, 2018 6:58 pm

Here we go again bunch of haters hating on St. Louis. I’m just glad the merge finally happened. Now no can pad the stats for oia teams. Oia gotta play real teams every week. Let’s see how they do now with no bye week games.

  14. SUPPORT UH FOOTBALL PLS February 13, 2018 8:10 pm

808 SportsFan i love and respect RED RAIDER NATION, but that Kahuku team that played BG could play yhem anywhere in the world and still get beat. BG had a very talented team. I watched them in in person beat the BRAKES off a very good TX team on there own campus. STL was smart by playing a not as talented BG in Hawaii!

  15. 808 sports fan February 13, 2018 8:37 pm

    Support hawaii.
Kahuku goes up to play national rank opponents on mainland soil. 2 years ago bishop Gorman, last year one of utah best high school. When was the last time st. Louis went to the mainland to play a national rank opponent?

  16. Abcdeer February 13, 2018 9:10 pm

mainland schools only wanna play St. Louis when they ain’t got no qb. At least they’re willing to go up against Cal now that he’s back. Back in the 90s all the mainland schools refused to play St. Louis. Maybe next time they’ll schedule a game when St. Louis has qb returning.

  17. Knation February 13, 2018 9:23 pm

@Footabalah first shaddapp! Second so you saying st.louis has brain but they did stupid things in Vegas that got them in trouble ha. I played for kahuku in 2000 and was the second year we beat them 😉😏

  18. anywaaaays!! February 13, 2018 9:32 pm

Cal Lee became a coward in his old age. Of course, Saint Lulu is stacking the field to their advantage. they demand home field and then watch who is reffing. they’re probably gonna be paid off by Saint Lulu just like this year’s state champion game.

Kahuku is the real champion. Rooted not recruited and willing to play the big boys, any time, any where. RRFL!

  19. HAWAII highschool football fan February 13, 2018 9:55 pm

Everybody calling Saint Louis scared and cowards but none of them understand that stl isn’t even allowed to travel out of state cause of the whole Vegas incident in the 90s. All you StL haters should try using your brains. And don’t forget, even stl guys we’re rooting for Kahuku in 2016.

  20. Lavar Ball February 13, 2018 9:58 pm

Should I send my son Lamelo to Saint Louis?!?!?!?!!?

  21. LaMelo Ball February 13, 2018 10:06 pm

Yoo pops!! I’d rather play ball for the RED RAIDERS!! RR4L!! #RootedNotRecruited

  22. John Kimble February 13, 2018 10:52 pm

BG prefers to travel to Hawaii. They utilize it to recruit. BG LB Gaoteote is from Mililani. Well…he at least played for Mililani his Freshmen year. Now he’s a 5-star recruit. St Louis is doing BG a favor. No hate. If they win…the entire state wins. Even more eyes will turn to Hawaii Football.

As for Kahuku. I think it’s better they travel. It’s a good experience for them. I’m sure if you ask the boys they are not mad at all for having to fly to the continent to play. Any time any where. No excuses. Go Big Red.

  23. Itdosentmatter February 13, 2018 11:55 pm

Haters who all rode the bench in high school trying to make up for it. Why not support the kids from home instead of trying to make up for your past inadequacies. Get a life!!! It’s all bout the kids and not you… TALKING TO YOU ANYWAYS!!!

  24. Dixon Yamada February 14, 2018 12:09 am

How come everybody use fake names and talk smack?

  25. Awrite!! February 14, 2018 12:26 am

Footaballah – the ILH and OIA are not even close in resources and recruiting abilities. Rich catholic schools that feel the need to be superior like Bishop Gorman are banned from playing in their local state high school leagues but they can participate in the nevada playoffs. Thats why BG has to travel and play out of state.

STL and Punahou should be traveling and playing a national schedule and only play OIA teams in the playoffs. Why recruit and build power teams and only stay in Hawaii picking on the lowly public schools? Does it make you feel better to smash OIA schools?

  26. Awrite!! February 14, 2018 12:28 am

Anywaaays!! was outed previously for being a a Punahou alum btw!

  27. Red Raider hater February 14, 2018 12:32 am

Haha! That’s funny rooted my a $$$! I know of 5 or 6 players that don’t live in the north shore.

  28. nobetter February 14, 2018 1:39 am

Awrite, Bishop Gorman plays full league games in Nevada, and also participates in the state tournaments as well as travel out of state to play. Yes, there are people like you in Nevada that think BG should not play with the public schools, just like you think the private schools like St. Louis and Punahou shouldn’t play the public schools. I bet you are okay with Kahuku smashing public schools on a weekly basis though. Much has been said about their dominance in Nevada football, and even baseball at one time but yet, there are public schools that have even longer winning streaks in other sports and no one bats an eye. Should these schools be banned also, because their primary competition cannot or refuse to rise up to the challenge?

  29. vegas dad February 14, 2018 4:07 am

I live in Vegas and my son goes to BG. I personally have a lot of respect for the teams from Hawaii. Seems like everyone hates STL HS like everyone hates BG here in the states. Win or lose, it is a great thing for these teams to play each other, National stage and it gets all the kids exposure to colleges. Cant wait to come to the islands.

  30. vegas dad February 14, 2018 4:19 am

AWRITE, BG does play the public schools and plays for the State title. We play a national schedule every year to compete. Competition makes everyone better. Trust me, it sucks playing the city schools, being up 45 pts in the 2nd qtr is no fun.

  31. ??? February 14, 2018 6:09 am

    ST Louis doesn’t Recruit!
    😂😂😂😂
    😂😂😂😂
    😂😂😂😂

  32. Footbalah February 14, 2018 6:58 am

Isn’t it strange how kids from Kahuku and live in Kahuku still decide to go to St. Louis? I mean we are talking no more than 10 minutes from the high school. Maybe the pastures are greener at Kalaepohaku. Why drive more than 1 hour 30 minutes each way 5 to 6 days a week?

Oh yeah, recruiting that’s why… pfff.
Maybe this is where the issues stem from.
You were never recruited and feel butt hurt over it.

All hail the mighty Red Raiders!!! 😂

  33. The Real Deal is Back February 14, 2018 7:18 am

Hey Kahuku fans, bend over and take your last two losses to the Crusaders like a man. Your whining and jealousy of the Red and Blue makes me happy.

    BACK TO BACK BABY!!!!

  34. AAAAAAAAA February 14, 2018 7:47 am

Kahuku Fans … waaaaa waaaa waaa lol

  35. Jr. Ale February 14, 2018 8:02 am

All of you need to go back to school and learn how to spell. You’re vs. Your… C’MON MAN

  36. Hateuscuztheyaintus February 14, 2018 8:13 am

Why does everyone hate in stl?? Is it because they wanted to and didn’t get?? Is it because they got in a realized that it wasn’t for them?? Is because year in year out stl finds ways to win??? Stl has the same kids that goes to any other schools.. Why please explain??

  37. Match February 14, 2018 8:32 am

RR4L fan. But, still cheering for my 808 teams!!! Let’s go Crusaders!!! We Represent the state no matter who from this small island plays!!! It’s always 808 vs the mainland!!! Come on peeps. Let’s keep reppin the small rock! Hi-life kine tingz!!!

  38. OneLove February 14, 2018 9:22 am

Great opportunity/exposure for the state of Hawaii. Good on St. Louis for taking on this exciting matchup and good on Kahuku for having done so in the past.

It is incomprehensible how some can read the news of this game and turn it into such a negative I.e. “who is officiating” “oh they scared to travel.” People please. These young athletes are balling out and get to take part in a great event. Awesome for Hawaii. Quit hating. Stop being so bitter. These are kids playing a game. Enjoy it.

  39. rrforlifebaby February 14, 2018 10:30 am

Always supporting local teams against mainland competition, so go get’em Crusaders.

BUT, being that it is St Louis, sorry, I need to get in my half cent opinion.
    1) Correct me if I’m wrong, but other than BG (loss) De La Salle (loss) and the then #7 ranked team at the time Bakersfield?? ( I think, I know it was a Cali team) a Win by the way and showing the rest of the nation that Bakersfield was way overrated(I think the team the year before was legit); the Crusaders haven’t really played any other tough mainland competition right?; remember, they also got blown up by Canyon of California.
    2) The Crusaders won’t be playing the same BG team that Big Red did two years ago; on the flip side, BG won’t be playing the same Crusader team of two years ago either.

With that being said, as a fan of local teams, Good luck to the Crusaders and get some!!
    RRFL!!!

  40. HBoy February 14, 2018 10:32 am

We as former high school players, almost players, and never players need to chill, let this generation take care of their business and cheer for our boys rather than be critical of them and the coaches. We as a whole (Hawaii) needs to take pride in how all of our kids do no matter what school they attend, where they live or anything else for that matter.
The bottom line is that we need to make sure they are doing the best they can on the field and off the field, in the classroom and out of the classroom, in their homes and out of their homes and of course in our state and out of our state. We are building for the future not just for today or last years championship. It is for their lifetime.
The BIG Picture is what really matters and football although may play a role in it, isn’t or shouldn’t be the biggest part of it. Let’s enjoy football together and cheer for our boys (whatever team they may play for) and move on as life does with or without us.
    Live PONO. Go BIG Red.

  41. TooMeke February 14, 2018 10:36 am

Gooooooo Crusaders!!!! (Just this once). Hope they keep it close.

Don’t think it’ll happen, but I’ll cheer for them anyway – especially vs a team that recruits nationally. St Lulu recruits statewide – BD on another level for recruiting…heck, my neph plays for them.

Good exposure for Hawaii HS sports…good for the kids…das all that matters.

    RRFL.

  42. rrfl February 14, 2018 11:28 am

The number one recruiting school in hawaii against the number one recruiting school in the country. It’s going to be a good game. I’m a red raider fan but go crusaders.

  43. Bow Down February 14, 2018 2:14 pm

According to some coaches, The Crusaders will be getting another great Qb from Damien..They say he’s gonna be a good one…If you got a weakness fix it, no problem…One of the advantages of the Crusaders….

  44. Shaka solar February 14, 2018 4:39 pm

Mark my words , “ the game against St. Louis against Bishop Gorman ain’t gonna happen”, the advertiser was fed lies from cal Lee himself

  45. Awrite!! February 14, 2018 5:06 pm

Not hating on the kids or schools, its the politics and unethical decisions and behaviors of the admins and alumni of the ILH that cause us to speak up.

The ILH have power and they are forced to do things that benefit them and their high tuition paying student athletes, even if it means stomping on the OIA schools, which they have done and continue to do.

  46. Awrite!! February 14, 2018 5:19 pm

Vegas dad – Competition does not make every one better, it only makes the top 2 or 3 teams better. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Competition also forces everyone to do things unethically in order to keep up.

The ILH recruiting the elite talent out of the local districts has caused those public schools to have losing records. So much talent from west Oahu is in the ILH, its not a coincidence that no west Oahu school won an OIA or state title in the past 20yrs.

Kaiser is another school that feeds the ILH, Kaisers football team is in shambles and forfeited their season last year.

“Competition” has also forced Mililani to become a better team by pulling talent from neighboring schools like waipahu, leilehua, Pearl city and Aiea, these schools are no longer competitive.

  47. ILH February 14, 2018 5:51 pm

@EVERYONEmakingdumbcomments If Nobody Knows this… St. Louis is not allowed to travel to the mainland due to some events that have occurred in the past. They were barely allowed to stay a night on the outer islands to play against teams just one island away. If STL could travel, They would by now, they like competition because none of you OIA schools will give it to them in the regular season. The merger for both OIA and ILH was brought up multiple times and the OIA schools voted against it because they were scared, every ILH school voted for it. So, if you think that there scared to play on the “mainland turf”, they’re doing what they can. Because they canʻt travel doesnʻt mean they shouldnʻt play mainland teams at all.

  48. KalihiBorne February 14, 2018 7:43 pm

I would love to see how many students on district exemption, held back a year, transferred in from “somewhere” to live with “family” or even 19 year olds are on Kahuku, Waianae, Campbell, Kapolei and Mililiani’s teams. Then we can discuss ILH supposed recruiting.

  49. Charles Amai February 14, 2018 8:07 pm

STL played Narbonne last year (Win). Narbonne ended up city and CIF state champs and ranked higher nationally. Quinn and Cordeiro came to play and dropped the hammer.

Too many coaching changes and drama at KHS. Getting rid of John Hao before Gorman was the death blow for the whole season.

I feel bad for Sol-Jay Maiava, he is lightning in a bottle, hope he transfers.

Good luck to Keala Santiago, rest assure top DBs gonna still rollout of the program with him in place.

All this BS in the RRN, the kids only gonna beat themselves. Self sabotage is well known in the North Shore.

  50. Real deal is in the Country February 14, 2018 11:59 pm

Stoked to see BG playing in Hawaii . Also can’t wait for regular season matches against ILH teams . Now you can’t pay stars against mediocre ILH teams!!
@ the real deal is back . We will take our 2 losses like a champ . Congratulations on your 5th state title and first back to back state titles . We have 8 and have a few back to back state titles too and know what it feels like. we will be back next year with some steam as usual . …. And don’t bring up 5 th year senior wielding prep bowls using Kahuku Kids . Lol , Why don’t you st lulu bandwagon fans learn the alma mater before you start cheering for St Louis , (I never seen a crowd lip sing a pretaped Alma mater at the Championship Game ! Smh) #8statetitles
