Pac-Five/Saint Louis I-AA football opener cancelled

Note: Adds comment from Pac-Five’s head coach.

An ILH season-opening football game between Pac-Five and Saint Louis I-AA has been canceled.

The Hawaii Baptist Academy Athletics Twitter page announced the cancellation. The game was scheduled to be on Friday, 5 p.m., at Aloha Stadium.

No explanation was given for the decision, but athletic programs and schools continue to operate tight protocols regarding exposure to the COVID-19 virus.

Dealing with quarantines is simply a part of the new normal.

“Much respect to Saint Louis coaches and athletic directors in making the difficult, yet necessary call,” Pac-Five head coach Kena Heffernan said. “I’m sure they will come back stronger as a team.”

At Saint Louis, student-athletes can test negative, but are still required to quarantine for 10 days if they were in the vicinity of someone who tested positive. This was the case last spring for sprinter Keanu Wallace, who tested negative twice, but was not allowed to run in the ILH track and field championships last spring.

Saint Louis I-AA is essentially the junior varsity squad. The ILH has included I-AA teams in the football schedule this season as opponents for Division I and II teams.
