No. 7 Kapolei (6-3, 4-3 OIA D-I) at No. 3 Kahuku (8-0, 7-0)

Carleton Weimer Field

The JV game has ended with Kahuku over Campbell 28-7.
Connection here is a little slow, please bear with this pupule. Plus, these new PVC pipes on the fence in front of the press box (for support) kill my video camera view, so I’ll be standing to handle the camera. Typing might be a challenge.

Gut feeling, this is a low-scoring game for some time. Kahuku has the girth, power and will to impose their smashmouth strategy on any foe. Can a team that almost entirely eschews the forward pass win an OIA and state championship?

Coach Vavae Tata and his staff sure would like to try and find out, it seems.

Note: There were some injuries during the JV game, including one to a player who suffered a head injury. The PA has announced that there will be a slight delay. My guess is the ambulance that’s waiting nearby will drive into the track next to the sideline where the Campbell JV player is sitting. He’s being cared for by paramedics.

FIRST QUARTER
Red Raiders called for a hold on its first series, three-and-out. This came after a first-down pass by Kesi Ah-Hoy was nearly picked off for a TD by Leon Lee, who dropped the ball. Then came a bad punt snap, but they got the punt out. Kapolei had first down at the KAH 42, but two plays into their series, Taulia Tagovailoa’s pass was picked off by Kekaula Kaniho, who went untouched down the right sideline for a 72-yard TD return. That Kahuku defense done it again. KAH 7, KPO 0, 10:20.

Second series much better for the visitors. 15-play drive covers 84 yards as Tagovailoa gets into a rhythm on short, quick passes. A TD pass was dropped, but they manage to get a 30-yard FG from Beau Meyer. KAH 7, KPO 3, 4:37.

Kahuku goes to its jumbo hybrid set — hurry-up, no huddle all the way — for the first time after a 68-yard kick return by Keala Santiago. Power, power, power. Ah-Hoy gains 11, 2, and then 21 yards off left tackle for a touchdown. Simply overpowered a stout Kapolei defense. Who needs a forward pass anyway? Not Kahuku. KAH 14, KPO 3, 3:26.

Hurricanes knocking on the door in this third series. Tagovailoa connects with Jaymin Sarono on a corner route, or “flag pattern” as we called it in the old days. The play goes for 39 yards to the Kahuku 2. Sarono has to be happy; he dropped the same pass, same route earlier.

Kahuku defense stiffens at the 2. Third-and-goal, Tagovailoa misses a wide-open Kainoa Bardon on a swing pass out of the backfield. ‘Canes decide to go for it on fourth down. Same play, this time Tagovailoa hits Bardon in stride for an easy 2-yard TD. Not sure how Kahuku let that happen twice in a row. KAH 14, KPO 10, :00.

SECOND QUARTER
Big Red back at it again with power football. Ah-Hoy carries five times in a row and is still the only ballcarrier so far in the game for Kahuku. Then a chop-block penalty on Kapolei moves the ball all the way to the 29, and on another Ah-Hoy carry, a facemask penalty.

Harmon Brown finally breaks Ah-Hoy’s string by running for 10 yards. Ah-Hoy runs for an 11-yard TD on the left side, skillfully wiggling and eluding tacklers as he follows his big boys. KAH 21, KPO 10, 9:07.

Kapolei has a masterful drive on its fourth series with Jenesus Tago-Su‘e pulling in darts over the middle from Tagovailoa. In traffic. Fearless. But at the 11-yard line, Tagovailoa has nobody open and forces a pass. Kaniho one-hands a leaping pick at the 4-yard line. Wasted drive. Almost paydirt, but Big Red comes up big with 4:47 left in the half.

Kahuku drives 96 yards in five plays, al on the ground. It’s Ah-Hoy for two plays, then Harmon, who carries three times. He caps it with a 75-yard run up the middle for a TD. He seemed to be stopped near the line of scrimmage, but emerged from a scrum like a rocket. Maybe his forward progress had been halted, but he was in a crowd and I doubt any of the officials could see him. KAH 28, KPO 10, 2:55.

Kapolei starts at its 20 after another kickoff by Kekoa Sasaoka finds the end zone for a touchback. Tagovailoa hits Ty-Noah Williams for his second reception, but the drive stalls out at the Canes’ 31. Williams has been covered closely tonight: five targets, two catches, 10 yards. They certainly know his name and number.

Kahuku drives to the Kapolei 23, but Sasaoka is wide right on a 41-yard FG try. No matter. On the next play, Kahuku safety Stokes Botelho picks off a Tagovailoa pass and weaves across the field before being forced out of bounds at the 1-yard line. Just 4.7 seconds left in the half. Each team calls a time out. Kahuku is going for it.

Ah-Hoy leaps and is stopped short. Ref blows the whistle, KAH time out with :00.5. This time, he sneaks in for the TD. KAH 35, KPO 0, :00.

HALFTIME
Interesting stats… Ah-Hoy has 136 rushing yards on 19 carries. Just two pass attempts, no completions. … Tagovailoa is 21-for-39, 225 yards with one TD and three picks. … As a team, Kapolei has 230 yards of total offense. Kahuku has 234 total yards, all on the ground. But the Red Raiders are winning the turnover battle, 3-0.

THIRD QUARTER
Kahuku’s second series of the second half pays off. Ah-Hoy carries six times in a row out of the jumbo hybrid set, scoring on a 35-yard run on fourth-and-1. KAH 42, KPO 10, 4:58.

Kapolei drives to the KAH 12, but the drive stalls in the red zone again. KAH bending, not breaking.

FOURTH QUARTER
Brown breaks away for a 55-yard TD run. Kahuku doing the same thing over and over again. Two pass attempts in the first half, none in the second. KAH 49, KPO 10, 10:04.

Tagovailoa trying to evade a pass rusher, forces a pass into traffic and is picked by Hirkley Latu. New QB in the game is Cameron Renaud. Kekona Neumann also rotating at QB.

I think all the kapolei posters were at the game and can’t respond ’cause they driving back…lol. Interesting how soft Big Red D was playing, but brought the heat at certain times. Bring on the Gov’s!!! RRFL!

  11. NSfootball October 17, 2015 9:01 pm

All you fake RR fans stop talking ish and be humbo! If you was a true RR fan you would have been at the game live cheering like the real Tanoai, not home on your computer talking ish with fake names.

Our boys doing all the dirty work on the field and your sorry little mouth out here talking like a kid. Grow up! Respect our RR boys on the field by respecting our opponents online!

Sorry State of Hawaii, thats the only one or two childish fans here in Kahuku! probably some small white kid that got beaten up at school this year.

  12. Good Story October 17, 2015 9:07 pm

@NSfootball…thank you. Nice to live in one free country. I’m a grown man, not white, and never got beaten up. But I respect your opinion.

  23. Lee Boy October 17, 2015 10:34 pm

@Good Story- I don’t need to hide behind nobody and if you been reading I predicted Kahuku vs Mililani in the OIA final. I thought this game was going to be closer but you guys ran all over Kapolei. Do you want a cookie now

  24. chaddap October 17, 2015 10:58 pm

Now all u ding dongs that predicted an upset where u at? Too much run ur mouth and now nowhere to be found.

  25. Homegrown October 17, 2015 11:01 pm

Is GBR and Good Story the same person? Come on. Show some humility. Congrats to the boys and coaches puttin in work. Muddy conditions slowed big red d big time. But still able to get the job done.

  26. Good Story October 17, 2015 11:02 pm

    @Lee Boy
Don’t just pick and choose your comments, I posted 3 exact, word for word comments you made. And no ack. If Kapolei was even close…you would’ve been the first one here gloating about how much you know. You know where you can put that cookie…

  27. chaddap October 17, 2015 11:03 pm

I’m looking for @better story. The one who said we straight was gonna lose and our horrendous secondary, who by the way picked of Tagovailoa 3 times. The kid is good but come on how can u really say we’re overrated? Yet another week we proved the haters wrong. First waianae for the upset, they get smashed and then Kapolei, same thing. Ur brains are overrated

  28. Good Story October 17, 2015 11:08 pm

    @ Homegrown
There are many signs of humility. People continuing to tell us to be humble is not one of them…with all due respect, I don’t need self-righteous judgements. Comment as you like, “allow all men the same privilege”.

  29. Insideoutsidein October 17, 2015 11:14 pm

Uuuuu….I want a cookie.. Lol.. Good job Kahuku!! Props to Tagovailoa. It’s always sad to end the season and turn in the pads, especially the seniors. Kapolei”s offense did improve since there last meeting but again fell short. Tonights game will even improve the boys in Red defense against a pass happy offense. Can’t wait until next weeks game against the Govs who is pretty much one dimensional as well. There passing stats has improved but may not be enough.

  30. Pukateet October 17, 2015 11:16 pm

No Lee boy, we want you to shut your mouth and stop making ignorant predictions

  31. GoBigRed October 18, 2015 12:18 am

@homegrown… nope, not da same. and i had plenny humility pie last year due to jeddy coach who obviously didn’t know how to coach. plus…i’m having all da fun i can on these boards…cuz das all it is…fun n games. u cheer da way you want to and i’ll cheer da way i want to… i’m just ‘airing out’ how 99% of us REALLY feel…but too ‘humble’ to say it…

@Lee Boy – how you gonna ack all ‘grown up’ all of a sudden??? cuz your past posts on other threads are STILL THERE for all too see… or are you now instantly “humbly proud” or “proudly humble” cuz your boys beat Punahou…? lol…thou hypocrite thou… good game for Crusaders. one more for all da ILH marbles.

@NSFootball… talk about childish…your post is da most childish on here. killing me. hello? some of us live on da M.A.I.N.L.A.N.D. and no can attend (I spelled it out for you cuz I get da feeling I had to for you – oh yeah… das me spelling it out again). I could say something like you must be a ‘big brown kid’ dat bullied da ‘small white kids’… but I won’t… oh… oops… my panty. shoo fly… this is an ‘adults only having fun’ zone. and stop ASSuming u (or anybody else, including myself) has cornered da market on what it means to be a “true RR4L”… your comments lead me to believe you don’t really know. try not to take it so personally… psst… btw… YOU are also using a fake name… HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!

  32. GoBigRed October 18, 2015 12:29 am

and just for giggles – I’m calling Kahuku vs Waianae for OIA championship game… cuz das what my crystal ball told me…

why aren’t ILH games on TV? these are some of the best games and would love to watch (i’m on da mainland)… hopefully next week is on TV. or some alumni for either/both schools can use an app like Livestream…? das how all us RR4L alumni on da mainland get to watch all their games.

plus i’m just glad da OIA refs aren’t da only crappy refs… seems to be a lot of bad reffing this year…

can you say bypolar!!! don’t forget to take your meds. noff said

  37. GoBigRed October 18, 2015 10:46 am

@Lee Boy… please explain… cuz I don’t see how me wanting to watch ILH games makes me bipolar…? Or maybe you don’t know the true nature of that disease state?? Don’t talk about stuff you know nothing about… (like football)… hahahahahaaa!

    killing me.

  38. Lee Boy October 18, 2015 11:06 am

Gobigred- you are right i don’t know nothing about football. I just posted that up because you were talking smack about some ILH games that you had no clue because you wasn’t there to see the game. I am not arguing with you because you have no common sense. Maybe you are so ignorant that can’t come up with that conclusion. Smh

  39. Good Story October 18, 2015 11:21 am

    @Lee Boy
Just…just …just go away. Take your waste time, no make sense comments and jam. Come back with more intelligent stuffs. Go to your other forum where all you St. Louis folks was complaining abut the refs.

  40. Good Story October 18, 2015 11:23 am

…yes, when you was hiding, I saw you posting up over there. Hey, but I not going side bust on your guy’s forum.

  43. GoBigRed October 19, 2015 4:59 am

@Lee Boy. I take back what I said about you not knowing anything about bipolar. It’s apparent that you are an expert on that disease…because you ARE bipolar. LMFAO!!!!!

Just keep cheering for St Louis because that’s the limit of your football expertise: cheerleader! “Gimme an ‘S’!” Hahahahaaaaaaa!!!!!

  44. Lee Boy October 19, 2015 10:20 am
