Punahou’s Ronley Lakalaka has given an oral commitment to San Diego State University.
Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance shared the news on Friday morning. Lakalaka, a 6-foot, 210-pound outside linebacker, was an All-State second-team selection. He is currently on the Punahou Division I basketball team and also competes in track and field.
He is the younger brother of Hawaii running back Steven Lakalaka.
Now this I don’t understand.
Probably looking for a coach who will be around for more than a year.
I believe that a recruit should got school wherever they chose to go but i am totally surprised too. Hawaii was the first to offer, I would see Ronley at all Hawaii home games, and when UCLA rescinded Steven Lakalaka’s scholarship didnt UH step in and offer him a scholarship that he took? And you choose to play at a rival school? Cant wait to San Diego State comes down to Aloha.
No surprise here. Some athletes would like to see what its like going away to college. UH is in a mess right now especially in the athletic department don’t blame him at all. I’m sure his family is backing his decision to go away. Good luck to him.
Best of luck to Lakalaka. SDSU assistant Jeff Horton (former UNLV HC and Wisconsin assistant) is a big fan of Hawaii high school players and actively recruits the state. I guess if you’re from Hawaii and you chose to live somewhere else, San Diego would be the next best place as it’s quite nice and a very livable area (weather, beaches, laid back atmosphere, etc).

what’s there not to understand?
Too small. Steven Lakalaka? Brother or cousin
When is the signing date?
You play and star at UH, you set yourself up for life with a good paying job in the islands. SD State has no following at all. It’s the Chargers who get the attention and press in San Diego, not the Aztecs. They play in half-empty Jack Murphy Stadium.
This guy is a SMALL linebacker by Div.1 standards and if he’s as slow as his older brother, UH is not missing out at anything.
