Konawaena is moving up to Division I in BIIF football, according to a league source close to the situation.
The news was first reported by West Hawaii Today’s J.R. De Groote.
The decision was finalized at the league’s monthly meeting Wednesday.
With the Wildcats moving up, there will be six teams in the D-I race this fall. The other five are six-time defending champion Hilo, Kealakehe, Waiakea, Keaau and Honokaa.
The Dragons from Honokaa announced their decision to move up to D-I earlier this year.
BIIF football is going through big changes. In January, the league announced the addition of three 8-man football teams into the 11-man mix starting this fall — Ka’u, Kohala and Pahoa.
Those three will be in BIIF D-II along with defending champion Kamehameha-Hawaii and Hawaii Prep.
Both D-I and D-II will play home-and-home regular-season schedules.
As it stands now, the top two teams in the regular season in D-I and D-II will play in two championship games with the D-I and D-II state berths on the line, the source said.
Luna’s?????
If can, can. If no can, blame it on #’s or any other lame, weak excuse.
Way to go Konawaena! KS Hawaii will stay down and beat up on the 8 man teams, what a joke. Shows how much their Administrators value the easy way out.
Totally agree with Rim. I have one word for the decision makers at KSH…SHAME!!! Two games against HPA, Ka’u, Pahoa, Kohala, really??? May as well engrave their name on the plaque and hand it over to them already. Talk about sandbagging… there isn’t enough sand in the state to
fill those bags. Kudos to Konawaena and Honokaa for stepping up. That’s a hard decision for the Wildcats becaus I believe they can compete in Div.1 on the Big Island, but they are a better fit in Div. 2 for State Tourney. On top of that they are considered a top contender for the Div. 2 title every year. Come on KSH grow a pair and step up .
Luna’s affraid to move up to D-1
