GAME NIGHT 9/27: McKinley/Waialua

Waialua 49, McKinley 14, FINAL

———-

9:09: Clock expires on the kickoff return and we’re done.

9:05: McKinley, at least, will have the last word in terms of scoring in this game. Kaena Leopoldo winds back and throws it up for Aaron Velasco, who had the 90-yard kick return TD earlier. He catches this one behind the Bulldogs’ DBs and takes it 77 yards to the house, leg cramp the final few yards and all. 2-point conversion by Tyler Sheidlin is good.

9:00: Buchanan back in the game … and she’s immediately picked off by Mana Benz. It looks like he’s in on about a 30-yard interception return … but the line judge calls him down at the 1. After a timeout, Waialua gives it right back to Benz for the 1-yard touchdown carry.

8:56: It’s a “meh” of a three-and-out for the Bulldogs with the running clock winding down in this game. Looks like Dicion will finish at sixth in all-time Waialua game passing at 284 yards.

8:54: Leopoldo goes incomplete on fourth-and-2 from the Waialua 45. Turnover on downs.

8:48: There goes Quilinderino for the 11-yard touchdown run, his second of the game, and we’re into running clock territory.

8:45: Speaking of top-10 performances, Kyler Dicion is into the top 10 in Waialua passing in a game. He’s up to 284 yards, which is good for sixth right now. The record is 341 yards by Caleb Fore in 2006.

4Q

8:42: Bulldogs on the move as the third quarter comes to an end, ball at the McKinley 33. Quilinderino is up to 132 yards on 11 carries. He needs 32 more yards to crack into the Waialua top 10 in rushing totals in a game.

8:38: Leopoldo puts some completions together and gets McKinley up in the red zone for the first time offensively tonight. But Dylan Yadao picks him off near the goal line and returns it to the 7. Second pick of the game thrown by Leopoldo.

8:31: Waialua manages just one first down this time, and it’s a punt up to the McKinley 25.

8:29: Quilinderino has eclipsed 100 yards rushing tonight, on his ninth carry.

8:26: Leopoldo gets a 7-yard lob completion to Zion Williams, and almost finds a man as he’s being brought down on third down, but it goes in as another three-and-out for the Tigers. Waialua ball at its 33 looking to mercy rule clock this thing.

8:24: McKinley going back to its passing QB Leopoldo to begin its first drive of the second half.

8:22: WOW. One-handed grab out of the air in the end zone by Justyce Lacar. That was truly impressive. It’s a 20-yard TD reception, Lacar’s second of the game, and third TD pass by Dicion. It’s 35-6 Waialua.

8:21: Bulldogs have reached the red zone with some more power running behind Quilinderino.

8:15: Third quarter underway, Waialua ball.

Waialua QB Kyler Dicion is 10-for-19 for 2 TDs and 0 interceptions. RB Storm Quilinderino has six carries for 81 yards and a TD, with two catches for 56 more yards. Receiver Kamu Lorenzo has three grabs for 55 yards and a TD.

HALF

7:48: Waialua takes over on downs at its 27. On second down, Dicion throws a slant to Quilinderino for a pickup of 33 yards up to the McKinley 40. Timeout Bulldogs with 1 second left in the half … and Dicion is hit as he throws, incomplete. That’s the half with Waialua leading 28-6 on homecoming night.

7:38: McKinley takes over at its 15 after an intentional grounding call on Dicion inside Tiger territory kills the Waialua drive.

7:32: Another success for McKinley as Dicion is pressured successfully on second and third down. First three-and-out … no, it’s a fake! Mahuka, the punter, tosses a 12-yard dart to Hunter Apau to keep the drive going.

7:28: Action is coming fast and furious up here now on the Northwest Shore. McKinley return man Aaron Velasco takes this kickoff 90 yards to the house, out-sprinting Waialua along the right sideline the whole way. That’s gotta feel good for the Tigers. Extra point is no good, though. 28-6 Waialua.

7:24: Good news for McKinley is that Zion Williams is back in the game after getting hurt. The very bad news is that Waialua defensive back Kayde Mahuka just ran in a pick-six touchdown from 29 yards out after snaring Leopoldo’s ball over the middle.

7:22: Kyler Dicion hits RB Storm Quilinderino for 23-yard pass, then Quilinderino takes the next handoff straight up the middle and makes a couple of very nice cuts through the secondary, outracing the Tigers for the 25-yard score. Three straight TDs by the Bulldogs to open this game, 21-0.

7:18: Ouch. Buchanan rolls out on second down and gets drilled for an 11-yard sack. Felt that one up in the press box. Second straight three-and-out for the Tigers. Waialua ball at midfield.

7:13: When play resumes, Dicion rolls out to his left and throws across his body to a streaking Kamu Lorenzo. He finds him in stride right at the goal line. Real nice ball for the 27-yard touchdown and it’s a 14-0 Bulldogs lead.

7:11: On a 17-yard pickup by the RB Quilinderino, McKinley’s two-way RB/LB Zion Williams goes down and limps off the field with help a couple minutes later. Big loss if they lose him.

7:08: Waialua up near midfield after a single play. But the Bulldogs’ top receiver by TDs, Kai Hoekstra, has yet to check in from the sideline.

7:06: McKinley goes three-and-out for the first time tonight. Buchanan and and the shotgun QB Leopoldo both go incomplete on throws during that series and they’re a combined 0-for-4 passing tonight.

7:00: After Quilinderino loses 2 yards on the first play of the quarter, Dicion goes over the top to the right corner of the end zone to Justyce Lacar for 21 yards. XP is good and it’s the Bulldogs by a TD on homecoming night.

2Q

6:57: Waialua RB Storm Quilinderino tears off a weaving 34-yard run. Dicion, the QB, follows quickly with a 22-yard strike to Dylan Yadao for a pickup of 22 up to the McKinley 19 as the first quarter ends.

6:54: Buchanan guides the Tigers inside Waialua again on the running of Zion Williams. But the drive stalls there and it’s the Tigers’ second punt of the night. Short return for Waialua and they begin on their 21.

6:48: Waialua going for it on fourth-and-7 at the McKinley 39 … Kyler Dicion throws incomplete. Three straight misfires.

6:42: On third-and-9, McKinley passing QB Kaena Leopoldo is about to get sacked and fumbles it. He recovers it for a loss of 14 and the Tigers punt. It’s a good one, downed at the Waialua 6.

6:40: Tigers on the move into Bulldog territory on their first drive behind some old-school I-formation running.

6:34: Zion Williams gets a nice return out to the 35 for McKinley.

6:31: Waialua wins the toss and elects to defer. Bulldogs kicking off to Tigers right to left.

6:11: Waialua is rolling with Kyler Dicion as its starter at quarterback for the third straight game, with former QB Justyce Lacar playing receiver, says coach Lincoln Barit. McKinley coach Pat Silva has senior Alexandria Buchanan going at QB.

5:52: While we’re waiting, here’s some shots of the picturesque sunset beyond the Waialua field.

5:52: The Waialua homecoming court has extra time to work through its paces.

5:51: McKinley buses just arrived. Looks like a 6:30 kickoff.

5:48 p.m.: The game has been delayed because the McKinley bus has been caught in heavy West-bound traffic on the H-1. Once the bus arrives, the Tigers will require another 30 minutes for warmups. So it’s looking like at least a 6:30 start.
