Damien runs out the final 2:40 after Kailua’s on-side attempt goes out of bounds at the Kailua 38. A solid win for the Monarchs playing without their starting QB. Lacio finishes 13-for-24, 225 yards, two TDs, no picks. Sulu wraps up with 184 yards on 29 carries, and Iaea helps with 76 yards on 10 carries. Damien improves to 4-2 in ILH D-I play (6-2 overall). Kailua falls to 3-5 overall, still 2-2 in OIA D-I.

This game is basically done, but Damien is playing without discipline, assessed two personal foul penalties on consecutive plays. That’s 132 yards in penalties, or basically 2-3 extra possessions and drives for the opponent, or 2-3 less for your own team. Friel finds Kohatsu for an 8-yard TD pass. Two-point PAT is no good as Friel is sacked. DAMIEN 28, KAILUA 12, Q4, 2:40.

Damien running out the clock as Sulu departs. He has 28 carries for 153 yards and Iaea replaces him in the backfield. Damien ball at the Kailua 31, third and 7 with 3:55 left after a Kailua time out. And now, it begins to drizzle. That 40-percent call by the weather forecasters was right. OK, Sulu re-enters, run up the middle, makes a nice cutback and it’s a 31-yard TD on his 29th carry on a humid night. DAMIEN 28, KAILUA 6, Q4, 3:45.

Kailua goes three-and-out for the third time in the second half, punt is fair caught at the Damien 33 with :26 left in the third quarter. Sulu opens the fourth quarter with a 3-yard run. At this point, Damien has 134 yards of total offense since halftime. Kailua has three yards in the second half. Fourth down and it’s River Iaea, the punter, who runs 11 yards for a first down again. After a huge Damien holding penalty, the Monarchs eventually punt. Fair catch by Kailua at its 28 with 7:58 to go.

The Monarchs are getting what they want, a lot of carries for Sulu and the occasional sideline or post pass. Lacio finds Natividad on a 55-yard pass in triple coverage. Great over-the-shoulder grab by Natividad. Kailua stiffens, however, and Damien will try a 36-yard field goal. Nope, delay of game. Then the snap is off target and the holder, Natividad, is down for a six-yard loss. Kailua ball at its 30.

Kailua goes three-and-out again, punt downed. Damien personal foul pushes the ball to the 21. Damien ball.

Damien drives 60 yards in eight plays. Sulu passes the 100-yard mark, and fullback River Iaea punches it over from the 1. DAMIEN 21, KAILUA 6, Q3, 6:47.

Kailua opens the second half with a three-and-out, punt. Damien ball at its 40.

It’s homecoming for Damien and Natividad is a king. Another king is offensive lineman Ramon Hernando.

Sulu sprints for a 77-yard TD on the next play, but it is negated by a Damien penalty. The Monarchs pick up a first down, but there won’t be a Hail Mary attempt. Lacio’s sideline pass is out of bounds as time expires with the Monarchs ahead 14-6. Halftime.

Very short field for Kailua, and Friel connects for two quick completions to Kohatsu. On third-and-6 at the 16, he misses Raynen Ho-Mook wide, wide, wide open in the end zone on the left side and throws an incomplete pass intended for Kohatsu. Fourth-and-6, Friel holds the ball too long and is sacked by Makanale‘a Meyer and Jay-Pedro to end the drive. Damien ball with 1:06 left in the half.

Damien’s fifth series begins at its 5 and Sulu breaks off a 35-yard run, but it’s called back. Next snap, Lacio holds the ball too long and it’s Tongotea again with a sack as Lacio barely avoids a safety. Ball at the 1-yard line and Kailua calls time out with 3:02 left in the half. Two plays later, Lacio nearly throws an interception as the Surfrider defense shades over toward Kaina. Punt is a fair catch at the Damien 36, 2:04 left in the first half.

Damien with a squib/onside on the kickoff, but it goes out of bounds. Great field position for Kailua at its 46. But it’s another three-and-out. Friel hasn’t gotten untracked for whatever reason. I thought he would run more. He had a hitch-and-go pass that went nowhere as the receiver was unable to shake loose. Punt is downed at the Damien 5, Q2, 3:42.

Damien starting to get the edge in the trenches as Sulu picks up 9, then 20 yards. After another smooth connection with Kaina, Damien has a first down at the Kailua 25-yard line. Time out by the Monarchs, their second of the first half, with 5:02 before intermission. Out of the time out, trickeration. Damien goes to a double-reverse and has a receiver wide open, but Natividad’s pass is too long. On the next snap, Lacio connects with Natividad again, this one a 25-yard TD. Lacio got loose, all right. The PAT is another fake, but this time Ho‘ohuli throws the ball and it is incomplete, intended for Jayce Jay-Pedro. DAMIEN 14, KAILUA 6, Q2, 4:45.

Kailua drives to the Damien 31, and despite second-and-1, can’t convert. Turnover on downs.

After another sack by Tongotea makes it second and 28, but Lacio sharpens up. Two big completions to Ezra Kaina give Damien a first down. Then Lacio launches a bomb to Natividad, who has his man by a step and hauls in a 42-yard TD. WOH. Duke Ho‘ohuli fakes the PAT and runs the ball in for two points. DAMIEN 8, KAILUA 6, Q2, 9:26.

Monarchs keeping it safe with Amo Sulu on the ground. Nice eight-yard run left, then he is stonewalled in the backfield. The second run for loss so far. Lacio has third and 3 and could run for a first down, but he throws slightly too far ahead of his receiver, incomplete. Fourth and 3, River Iaea is the punter and he runs for a 6-yard gain, first down. Damien runs left with three linemen stomping in front of Sulu and it’s a nice gain, but called back for illegal block by one of the WRs. The first quarter ends with Kailua ahead 6-0.

Damien isn’t the same offensively without QB Jake Holtz, who was ejected from the game last week for throwing a punch of sorts. Lacio played well in relief that night, but he was a bit tight in warmups. He should be looser by now. Lot of game to play. Damien trails ‘Iolani by one game in the ILH D-I standings and cannot afford a loss tonight.

Kailua QB Cameron Friel throws two passes, both incomplete and one almost picked for a touchdown by Kellen Robins-Beers. But his 41-yard screen pass to Rasay is a thing of beauty, all the way down to the 4. Laufili, the linebacker, enters as a fullback and carries to the 1, but the next two dives are stuffed by Damien. On fourth and 1, Friel runs play-action and tosses the ball to Koali‘i Kohatsu in the left side of the end zone for the TD. The PAT kick is blocked by Robins-Beers. KAILUA 6, DAMIEN 0, Q1, 2:04.

Elijah Laufili and Tevita Tongotea combine to sack Lacio to stifle Damien’s second series. Punt is downed at the Kailua 45, 4:45 left first quarter.

Kailua picks up a first down on a 13-yard run by Samson Rasay, but stalls at its 36 and punts. Damien ball at its 15.

Huge gamble early by Damien, which recovers the opening kickoff with an on-side kick. Ball at the Kailua 45. QB Logan Lacio gives it a try deep on the hitch and go with WR Jarvis Natividad, but he can’t catch it inbounds just past the left pylon. A 36-yard field goal try is wide right.
