2009 prep football all-star teams

The year 2009 was the final time two newspapers put out different All-State football teams.

Of the four different players selected with the top honors, there was only one unanimous selection from both papers.

Kahuku’s Kona Schwenke began the year as a four-star recruit and the name everyone knew on the Kahuku defensive line. By the time the season ended, a new name, Hauoli Jamora, was the star of the defense.

Jamora recorded five sacks in the OIA semifinals against Castle and then did it again in the final against Leilehua to knock off the Mules and senior quarterback Andrew Manley.

Manley was named the Honolulu Advertiser offensive player of the year, edging out Kamehameha running back Ryan Ho, who was given the honor by the Star-Bulletin.

Jamora shared the Advertiser’s defensive player of the year with Kamehameha’s Beau Yap.

Ho rushed for 1,530 yards and 19 touchdowns. In the state final against Kahuku, Ho had 121 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Warriors to their most recent state crown.

Manley threw for 3,100 yards and and 28 touchdowns to finish his career second all-time in passing with 7,637 yards. Only Tua Tagovailoa has surpassed Manley in the eight years since.

Manley’s passing total was actually second that season, trailing Pac-Five’s PJ Minaya, who threw for 3,765 yards and 45 touchdowns. Minaya’s top receiver, London Amorin, finished with 20 receiving TDs and 1,648 receiving yards, which is still second all-time to Saint Louis’ Gerald Welch.

Castle receiver Shaydon Kehano also had a big year with 1,185 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns.
