Punahou’s two track and field relay teams showed they meant business in an ILH meet last Saturday.
Both surpassed the top times in Hawaii for 2019. The Buffanblu’s 4×100 team ran a 51.17, topping Campbell’s 51.49 from earlier in the season. Punahou’s 4×400 unit finished in 4:10.66 to get past Mililani’s 4:10.97.
Coach Duncan Macdonald sees a possible bright near future for the Buffanblu relay girls, with the state meet on Maui looming May 3-4.
“The season has started well for both relay teams, but the lineup has been problematic with our early season meets,” he said. “We have had senior prom, a junior function, two weeks of spring break, each of which meant we were operating with a partial team.”
In three races, the Buffanblu’s 4×100 team has had three different lineups, but eventually the make-up of the unit will be (from leadoff to anchor) Stevie Marvin, Grace Blanchette, Kaylie Klausing and Lexie Lowery.
Maiya Fujiwara, a distance runner, served as anchor one week. Another week, Kaila Ronquilio ran the first leg, when the team hit that mark of 51.17.
Blanchette and Lowery are hurdlers who have replaced two departed seniors this year, Macdonald said.
“This weekend will be the first time the four of them will run together,” Macdonald said. “The 4×100 teams (in the state) are very close at this time of year. The top teams are separated by only a bad pass. Everyone is going to get better in the next few weeks.”
Campbell, ‘Iolani, Mid-Pacific, Konawaena, Mililani and Kauai have also run under 52 seconds this season.
Punahou is trying to defend its 4×100 state championship, when it ran a 48.76. The state-meet record is 48.35, set by Radford in 2010.
Ronquilio, Ally Little, Fujiwara and Kayla Almeida are Punahou’s 4×400 runners.
Little and Fujiwara finished Nos. 1 and 2 at the state meet in the 400 meters last year. Fujiwara was fourth and Almeida sixth in the state 800 in 2018.
“The group and their time are well ahead of last year’s progression,” Madonald said. “We didn’t run this fast until the Punahou Relays three weeks later last year. So I am expecting a lot of improvement in the coming weeks as we recover from the two-week spring break.”
In 2018, Punahou’s 4×400 team ran a 3:58.71, missing out on gold to Mililani by a decimal in the thousandths. The state-meet record is 3:57.47 by ‘Iolani in 2012.
Mililani’s 4:10.97 from early March is still the second best time in Hawaii in 2019.
