On this date in 2013, Kapolei played 12 minutes of nearly perfect football.
The Hurricanes scored 35 points in the fourth quarter to beat Leilehua 48-27 at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.
The Mules, ranked No. 7 in the state, turned the ball over three times in the final stanza. Mana Reis scored two of his three touchdowns in the spurt and Kainoa Brown punched in the go-ahead score with 4-yard effort with 4:06 left.
It was the first and last 100-yard game of Reis’ career.
Tristan Centeio and Paulo Bartley came up with interceptions for Kapolei during the spurt while Leilehua’s special teams imploded.
The glory was short-lived for the Hurricanes, as their only losing streak of the season followed with losses at Waianae and Campbell.
Coach Darren Hernandez unleashed the passing game to beat Kailua in the OIA playoffs but his team turned in the pads the next week following a crushing 17-10 loss to Farrington.
Leilehua rebounded to win three of its next four games behind three different quarterbacks (Mack Eberhart, Kalanimoku Pauole and Justin Jenks) but lost to Mililani 21-9 in the OIA quarterfinals.
Mililani beat Leilehua 44-14 three weeks earlier.
