On this date in 1990, Hawaii athletic directors came up with a formula to determine league representation in state tournaments.

The goal of the formula was to straighten out inconsistent standards, dividing the number of teams in a league by the number of teams in the state.

There were way more proposals killed than accepted, including adding a 220-pound weight class in wrestling. The measure failed for the second straight year but was approved five years later.

Jimmy Betham of Kahuku was the first champion in the weight class.
