OIA standouts Jazmyn Enriquez of Campbell and Leilehua’s Shantelle Mangrobang will have to defend their state championships from unseeded positions this year.
Enriquez pinned her way through states as the top seed at 97 pounds last year but a narrow loss to Erin Hikiji of Mililani in the OIA championships last week left her with an unfavorable seed this time. If Enriquez can get past Amanda Begonia of McKinley in the first round, she would meet two-time MIL champion Liana Ferreira of Baldwin in the second. Ferreira took third in the state last year behind Enriquez’s first, but they did not meet.
Leilehua’s Shantelle Mangrobang is used to reaching the top of the podium without a top seed, as she turned the trick last year. This one might be a little more daunting though, as she opens with Michaelah Vasquez of King Kekaulike in the first round and potentially ILH champion Haley Narahara in the second.
Narahara, of Kamehameha, beat the state champ 15-4 at Officials in December and finished third in the state last year.
