Gillcoat advances; Porter downed on Maui

Just two of eight wrestlers in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s pound-for-pound top-10 rankings are competing in the 51st annual Garner Ivey Invitational at the War Memorial Gym in Wailuku, Maui, this weekend.

On Friday, the tournament made it through the quarterfinals and will continue on Saturday with wrestlebacks, the semifinals and finals.

Kawehi Gillcoat of Lahainaluna, who is ranked No. 7 pound-for-pound, got through to Saturday’s semifinals in the 138-pound class. Gillcoat, a senior, has placed in the top six at states three times.

No. 10 p4p Brant Porter of Kamehameha was not as fortunate. He lost 8-6 in the quarterfinals to Gabriel Valdez of Baldwin in the 120-pound class. Porter placed second at states at 106 pounds last year.

Two schools from the mainland are competing in the tourney — La Grande (La Grande, Ore.) and Century (Hillsboro, Ore.).
