Kamehameha-Hawaii track and field standout Chenoa Frederick was named the Gatorade Hawaii athlete of the year despite not having a season.

Frederick, who was inducted into the Hall of Honor last month, is the fist girl to win the award three times. She has eight gold medals in her career despite not competing in the state championships in her senior year.

The Big Island has had the top track and field athlete four of the last five years, with Hawaii Prep’s Emma Taylor honored in 2016. Victoria Chang is the only other girl to win the award more than once, taking it in 1999 and 2000.

Previous winners in their states include Lolo Jones of Iowa and Allyson Felix of California. Frederick will be up for the national award in June.

She will go on to compete in track and field at the University of Hawaii.
