By Jerry Campany on February 7, 2020

After dismantling the OIA East last week, the Moanalua girls wrestling team is stepping up in class. Na Menehune had eight girls at the top of the podium last week, breaking the record of seven at an OIA East Division championships set by the 2007 Kahuku squad. Now that the OIA championships are here, Moanalua is looking for more. For all of their efforts at Farrington, only two Na Menehune received top seeds for today and Saturday’s tournament in Lana […]

Two boys going for their third league titles have significant roadblocks in their way. Kapolei’s Branden Pagurayan and Elijah Asuncion of Moanalua will try to triple up on OIA championships beginning today, and are the top seeds in their respective weight classes. Pagurayan, a junior on his way to the slam, can meet Moanalua’s Boltyn Taam in the final at 152 pounds. Taam is the reigning OIA king at 160 pounds after taking the ILH title at 145 in 2018 […]

Kapolei’s Branden Pagurayan rooting for stacked state bracket at 152

By Jerry Campany on February 2, 2020

Having laid waste to the OIA West, Kapolei’s Branden Pagurayan has bigger things in mind.  Paguraya, who is halfway to a state slam as a junior, dominated the OIA West Division championships at Pearl City on Saturday, earning two stoppages and a 19-5 major decision over Campbell’s Malcolm Bell in the final. It was Pagurayan’s third West crown, more than anyone in school history.  Pagurayan, ranked No. 3 in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound rankings, says he treated it like any other tournament, but there […]

Waianae’s Tiare Carlson and Anissa Wright of Campbell found themselves locked in a 2-2 tie halfway through their match for the 145-pound title at the OIA West Championships at Pearl City on Saturday.  Carlson, who pinned Wright in 2 minutes, 42 seconds at the Paani Challenge, earned a takedown in the first period but suffered a reversal to tie it up in the second. Desperate to keep her long winning streak alive, Carlson went from fierce competitor to friend in an instant.  […]

Kalani made its presence felt at the OIA East Division wrestling championships Saturday at Farrington’s Kitamura Gym. Whether it was by grittiness or technique, the Falcons got the job done. In the 12 boys and 12 girls divisions, five Kalani wrestlers made it to the championship match, with four of them winning titles. Two tenacious lower-weight guys — brothers Brayden and Jayce Kamimura — pulled out one-point victories over opponents from Moanalua. Brayden beat Na Menehune’s Dayne Takai 4-3 in […]

Atalbert DeBrum’s victory gives Kapolei the OIA team title

By Nick Abramo on January 25, 2020

Atalbert DeBrum was in a pressure situation, with all his teammates watching off the edge of the mat. His Kapolei Hurricanes were losing in the OIA dual-match championship to the Waianae Seariders — a three-point deficit — at the Campbell gym Saturday. So, DeBrum’s result would decide. Win it and the Hurricanes are OIA champions. Lose it, and the title goes to the Seariders. And the boy pulled through, pinning Waianae’s Andrew Bushong at 5:35 in the 120-pound division. But […]
