The senior athlete shared that paradoxical thinking in a Thursday interview before her Kamehameha practice. “I have so much trust in myself that I know once I go on the mat, I will do what I’m supposed to do,” Respicio said. “That’s the most important part about being a wrestler, knowing what you’re going to do and what you’re […]

GIRLS STATE BRACKETS: State champs Jazmyn Enriquez, Shantelle Mangrobang get tough draws

By Jerry Campany on February 15, 2020

OIA standouts Jazmyn Enriquez of Campbell and Leilehua’s Shantelle Mangrobang will have to defend their state championships from unseeded positions this year. Enriquez pinned her way through states as the top seed at 97 pounds last year but a narrow loss to Erin Hikiji of Mililani in the OIA championships last week left her with an unfavorable seed this time. If Enriquez can get past Amanda Begonia of McKinley in the first round, she would meet two-time MIL champion Liana […]

Their effort led Na Menehune to their third OIA title in a row, matching a streak set by Reggie Torres and Kahuku from 2003-05. No school has won four in a […]

Kapolei’s Branden Pagurayan cements top spot of stacked 152

By Jerry Campany on February 10, 2020

Consider it the Open Division of the state wrestling tournament.  Kapolei’s Branden Pagurayan beat Moanalua’s Boltyn Taam for his third OIA championship on Saturday, cementing the two state champions in the 152-pound class at the state tournament in two weeks. Kamehameha’s Kanai Tapia, who beat Pagurayan in overtime at Officials, won the ILH with a forfeit over injured Stone Franczyk of Hanalani earlier in the day. The HHSAA seeding meeting doesn’t happen until Saturday, but Pagurayan and Tapia will be in […]
