By Nick Abramo on December 6, 2018

Leilehua’s Kelani Corbett is going for her fourth state championship in wrestling in the spring. Not many have done that. But Corbett, ranked No. 1 in the first Hawaii Prep World pound-for-pound rankings of the season, suffered a rare loss in high school competition Saturday in the 155-pound weight class. Corbett lost 5-4 to Kaleinani Makuaole of Waianae, according to Corbett’s coach and father, Kevin Corbett. “It was a good match,” Kevin Corbett said. “She (Makuaole) had a nice takedown […]

P4P: Terukina tops first boys rankings

By Jerry Campany on November 29, 2018

Corey Cabanban and the stacked class of 2018 left a wide open boys wrestling scene behind them. Seven of last year’s top 10 pound-for-pound wrestlers departed to graduation, leaving Kamehameha junior Kysen Terukina as the new sheriff in town. Terukina shook off a shocking loss to Baldwin’s Kahuilihala Joy at Officials last year to pick up his second state title as a sophomore and put him halfway to the coveted slams in the ILH and states. Terukina stands at the […]

P4P: Corbett leads golden age of girls wrestling

By Jerry Campany on November 29, 2018

The short history of girls wrestling in Hawaii has never been so loaded with accomplished athletes. There are 16 state titles represented by this year’s preseason top 10, the same number we left off to end last season despite the graduation of Teniya Alo, Macy Higa and Ira Navarro. Kaiser’s Tiare Ikei took her talents to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, possibly the only place in the country a girl can find better competition than here in Hawaii. […]

Former Damien athlete loses lawsuit against ILH

By Nick Abramo on August 28, 2018

A state circuit judge ruled in favor of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and executive director Blane Gaison in a lawsuit challenging the league’s transfer rule. Last month, the parents of former Damien football player and wrestler Keoua Kauhi filed, dropped and then refiled the suit. At an Aug. 21 hearing, judge James Ashford made a summary judgment in favor of the ILH. Due to that summary judgment, Ashford did not consider a temporary restraining order or a preliminary injunction […]

Tiare Ikei, a Hawaii Technology Academy student who wrestled last season for Kaiser, won the bronze medal in the 49kg United World Wrestling Cadet Women’s World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, last week. Ikei pinned Munkhgerel Munkhbat of Mongolia in the first period of the bronze medal match. Earlier in the year, Ikei — the reigning 112-pound Hawaii state champion — won the U.S. women’s national championship in Irving, Texas, and the Pan-American championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala. “I’m thrilled,” Ikei […]
