Alana Dela Pena got cheers from the Blaisdell Arena crowd as she was being carried out on a stretcher. The Moanalua wrestler, who is the reigning 184-pound OIA girls champion, suffered a serious ankle injury in her opening match at the Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships on Wednesday. Wednesday morning provided a first for Kanani Chan. It is likely not to be her last. The Kamehameha-Hawaii senior posted her first state-tournament victory, defeating Phoebe Pineda Abaya of Kalani, 9-3, in the 132-pound weight class of the Texaco/HHSAA Girls Wrestling State Championships at Blaisdell Arena. Top seed Jazmyn Enriquez set for rematch with Punahou’s Sarah Obra Nakata

Jazmyn Enriquez made a decision after losing in the 97-pound weight class semifinals last year. She decided to kick tail. Now a junior, she is the top seed in this year’s 97 weight class at the Texaco/HHSAA Girls Wrestling State Championships. Campbells Enriquez defeated Jaysha Cachuella of Kapolei in preliminary-round action on Wednesday morning at Blaisdell Arena. Leilehua’s Kelani Corbett will try to become the fifth girl in state history to complete a slam this year, joining Caylene Valdez of Moanalua (2003), Kamehameha’s Randolyn Nohara (2007) Teshya Alo of Kamehameha (2016) and Lalelei Mataafa of Lahainaluna (2016). Hawaii’s Tiare Ikei won a gold medal at the Flatz Open in Wolfurt, Austria, last weekend. Representing Team USA, Ikei went 4-0 at 53kg (116.5 pounds), with three falls and one tech fall. It was more than a slam on Saturday, it was a double slam. Kealakehe’s Roxie Umu picked up her fourth BIIF title on Saturday at Keaau. Teammate Kobby Faeldonea did the same on the boys side. The Waveriders swept the team titles. Umu’s triumph is the first in school history.
