Rob Hesia, Keith Laeha named wrestling coaches of the year

Kamehameha wrestling coach Rob Hesia has been named the coach of the year by the Hawaii Wrestling Coaches Association at the national body’s meeting in Pittsburgh. Hesia is the first Kamehameha coach so honored since Chris West in 2012-13. Hesia led the Warriors to state team titles for both the boys and the girls, the first sweep since Lahainaluna in 2015. Five additions give Hawaii 17 nationally ranked girls wrestlers

The fourth set of national rankings in girls wrestling by USA Wrestling, FloWrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum for the 2018-19 season were published on Thursday with five new wrestlers from Hawaii listed. A total of 17 overall made the rankings of top 20 girls high school wrestlers in each individual weight class. Kamehameha’s Kysen Terukina kept his celebration short after winning his third state title at the Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships last week. He knows he’s got one more to go to become the sixth boys wrestler in state history to win the slam. Terukina ends the year No. 1 in the Hawaii Prep World pound-for-pound rankings released today. Three-time champ Tatsuhiko Hikiji passes skills on to daughter

The way back machine takes us to 1968, 1969 and 1970, when Tatsuhiko Hikiji won state wrestling championships while competing for Kaimuki. He was the first boy to do it three times in Hawaii, and now his daughter, Erin Hikiji, is a freshman wrestling for Mililani.
