Kahuku twins are water polo co-players of year

Kahuku’s Kahaulelio girls — twins Kahea and Nohea — were picked as the OIA girls water polo co-players of the year, the league announced Monday. Kapolei’s Dexter Lee was picked as coach of the year. Top colleges recruit Eichelberger for water polo

Goalkeeper Emalia Eichelberger stopped 10 shots in Punahou’s 4-2 water polo state tournament victory over Kamehameha on Saturday. The junior is not your standard issue, run-of-the-mill goalkeeper, as can be ascertained by the mere two goals she let in during the biggest match of the season. Punahou repeats as Water Polo champ

Emma Choy scored two goals and Kelly Fricke and Marissa Miller each added one as Punahou won its eighth straight state water polo title on Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center. The Buffanblu beat Kamehameha 4-2 in the final. It was Punahou’s fourth win in four tries against the Warriors this season. Choy and Fricke scored in all three matches in the tournament. Ganir scored in all four matches the Warriors played.

No surprise, the ILH’s top two teams will play for the state water polo title. Punahou beat Kapolei 13-2 and Kamehameha downed Kahuku 9-4 to set up Saturday’s title showdown at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center. The ILH has won every title in the tournament’s history and has had both teams in the final in six of the past seven years. Punahou is going for its eighth straight title. If history is any indication, one of the state water polo semifinals will be a blowout and the other will come down to the wire. Punahou and Kapolei tangle at 5:15 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center for one spot in the final and Kamehameha and Kahuku play for the other spot after them. Punahou is the top seed for the Stanford Carr Development Girls Water Polo State championships beginning Wednesday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The Buffanblu will be going for their eighth straight title. An ILH team has won every year. Punahou opens play in the second round between either Baldwin or Roosevelt.
