Pass-happy Kahuku shows up at Waipahu

By Nick Abramo on July 27, 2018

Wesley Alo-Maiava had a spectacular first play Friday. The Kahuku running back took it to the house — an 80-yard run — on the first play of the Red Raiders’ scrimmage against Waipahu. After finding the end zone, he immediately lifted his hands toward the Waipahu bench and gave a wave. “That was to all the Waipahu kids,” Alo-Maiava said. “Let them know we’re here.” It was not a show of cockiness as much as it was a release of […]

Konawaena/Waipahu: Instant classic

By Billy Hull on November 4, 2017

Both head coaches — Brad Uemoto at Konawaena and Waipahu’s Bryson Carvalho — struggled to keep their emotions in check. A 53-50 Konawaena victory over Waipahu in the Division II semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships on Friday night left players, fans, and both coaching staffs completely spent after the final whistle sounded at Julian Yates Field in Kealakehua on the Big Island. A state tournament record 103 points were scored. Waipahu’s ultra-talented sophomore running back Alfred Failauga set […]

Q&A: Waipahu senior QB Braden Amorozo

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2017

There’s hardly a thing given freely in football, so Braden Amorozo dives deep into the well of knowledge. He studies. Like his favorite athlete, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Amorozo might study defenses morning, afternoon and night. But overcoming adversity? That doesn’t really derive from video study or any other cerebral journey. Down 15 points against Pearl City in the OIA Division II championship game, Amorozo’s Waipahu Marauders were in dire straits. “We knew nothing would be easy, but […]

Freshman kicker delivers Waipahu an OIA title

By Christian Shimabuku on October 27, 2017

Quarterbacks dream about the scenario. Coaches scheme for it and kickers dread it until it’s over. Everything Waipahu had worked for since March presented itself when the Marauders recovered a Pearl City fumble on the Chargers’ 41-yard line with under five minutes remaining in the OIA Division II championship game at Aloha Stadium on Thursday night. Down by six points, Waipahu quarterback Braden Amorozo seized the moment, delivering a 33-yard dime to Isaac Yamashita that set up a 3-yard rushing […]

GAME NIGHT 10/26: Pearl City/Waipahu

By Hawaii Prep World on October 26, 2017

The OIA Division II championship is up for grabs tonight at Aloha Stadium as undefeated Waipahu, ranked No. 9 in the state this week by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, faces a Pearl City team it beat 37-6 earlier this season. That game was tied 0-0 at halftime. The Marauders lead the series 20-9 in the modern era (since 1973) of high school football. Waipahu eliminated Pearl City in the OIA D-II semifinals last year before losing to Waialua in the final. […]

Q&A: Waipahu football coach Bryson Carvalho

By Paul Honda on October 26, 2017

The Waipahu Marauders have been there before. When Bryson Carvalho was an assistant (and JV) coach Bryson Carvalho, the program won the OIA Division II football title. Waipahu football took the OIA D-II titles in 2006 under Sean Saturnio and in ’11 under Eric Keola. The Marauders (9-0) enter tonight’s OIA title game with Pearl City (7-2) in an ultimate winner-take-all: a championship and the lone state-tournament berth. Coach Carvalho chatted with Hawaii Prep World on Wednesday. Bryson Carvalho Waipahu […]

Failauga carries Waipahu to OIA D-II title game

By Kyle Sakamoto on October 14, 2017

Waipahu’s Alfred Failauga turned in a super-human performance Friday against Roosevelt. When it was all over, Failauga reminded his coach that he is, after all, human. Failauga rushed 40 times for a season-high 239 yards and two touchdowns, and surpassed 1,000 yards for the season, as host Waipahu beat Roosevelt 38-0 in an OIA Division II semifinal game. “He actually told me after the game, ‘Coach, remember I’m human’ because he was just gassed,” said Waipahu coach Bryson Carvalho. “That’s […]
