Update: McKinley 36, Waipahu 15, final

By Paul Honda on October 11, 2013

First Quarter 5:54 – The Tigers score on their second series, a 48-yard bomb from Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta to Tyrell Tuiasosopo. Two surprises here. One, Waipahu had solo coverage on Tuiasosopo, one of the best WR talents in the state. Two, MTI threw it a long, high ways. His arm strength is way beyond what I expected. I saw him throw a play-action lob for a TD recently, but this long stuff is a surprise. PAT kick was blocked. Tigers 6, […]

Rivalry week: Cane Knife Classic

By Jerry Campany on September 25, 2013

Campbell football coach Amosa Amosa knows that you win some and you lose some. But one thing he has never lost is the perpetual trophy given out to the winner of the Waipahu-Campbell rivalry. The winner of the football game between the sugar communities has been awarded the Cane Knife since 1963. Waipahu has come for the Cane Knife three times since Amosa has been the head coach at Campbell, and all three times the former UH offensive lineman has […]

Waipahu raises the Jolly Roger

By Brian McInnis on September 16, 2013

This post was inches away from being about Aiea. But thanks to quarterback Kai Mercado-Aiona’s heroics, Waipahu stole the show and the game on Saturday with a last-second touchdown to win 20-19 over Na Alii. Mercado-Aiona had to fully extend to get the ball across the goal line on the game’s final play. The win all but eliminated snakebitten Aiea (0-4) from playoff contention and gave Waipahu (1-2) a fighting chance at the OIA Red West playoffs. “It’s pretty big,” […]

Pupule’s ballot: Still 1a and 1b

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2013

This may seem manic or chaotic or just wishy-washy, but here goes. I voted Kamehameha No. 1 on my ballot for the Star-Advertiser Prep Football Top 10 this week. Yet, I expect Punahou to win on a last-minute field goal against the Warriors tonight. Say whuhhh… It’s like this. The Warriors, my opinion, have proven to be worth of the top spot by virtue of five wins, almost all against elite competition. Punahou deserves the spot, too, but until we […]

Waipahu’s youngsters get their shot

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 16, 2013

With two first-time starters leading the offense, Waipahu’s defense gave the youngsters a chance to settle into the Marauders’ season opener on Friday night. Academic probation left Waipahu without its regular starters in the backfield, and sophomore quarterback Gavin Marques and running back Matthew Leilua combined for 227 rushing yards, with Marques adding two touchdown passes in his varsity debut in the Marauders’ 19-14 win Friday night. Five lost fumbles, three in the first half, hampered Waipahu’s offense. But the […]

Football Tour: Waipahu

By Paul Honda on August 8, 2013

Tour stop: Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013 The Waipahu Marauders have some basic, key strengths in place. Continuity under Eric Keola and his staff. A returning, seasoned quarterback in Kai Mercado-Aiona. Discipline. Aggression. What they also have is an option attack, something Mercado-Aiona has studied and executed since he was a fifth-grader. When nobody else is running an offense like the option, it gets much harder to defend. In a wild OIA Red West, that could make a big difference. For […]
