Waipahu’s Simanu to test Kaiser

By Jerry Campany on September 3, 2015

Looking at the schedule before the season, Kaiser coach Cameron Higgins knew he would be scheming against the OIA’s best receivers week after week. It is doubtful he thought he would see the best one this week. The struggling Cougars travel to Waipahu on Friday to face Andrew Simanu and the Marauders. Simanu is the surprise leader in OIA Red receiving, catching 18 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns through three games. Jordan Taylor, last year’s receiving leader for […]

By Nick Abramo on August 15, 2015

Kickoff is now!!! 5:18 p.m. Waipahu has the ball for its first possession. It’s three and out and a punt situation. Farrington has the ball for the first time. Bishop Rapoza at quarterback. Challen Faamatau gains 13 yards for a first down. Another first down, but two great stops by defensive linemen Frisco Iosua and Isaiah Manisela. But Farrington strikes at 6:27 of the fourth quarter: >> KINGSTON MOSES-SANCHEZ streaks down the right sideline and RAPOZA puts it easily into […]

Rivals Castle and Kailua get to renew series

By Nick Abramo on August 2, 2015

Circumstances fell into place for the Kailua vs. Castle football rivalry this year. The neighboring Windward-side schools did not play last year due to Oahu Interscholastic Association’s decision to move away from the East-West divisional alignment. When this year’s schedule came out, the Knights vs. Surfriders was not listed, either. But, things have changed since the original schedule was made and Castle visits Kailua on Friday at 7:30 p.m. for a regular-season nonleague game. Originally, Castle was scheduled to play […]

Ineligibilities cause downgrade in FB contests

By Nick Abramo on July 27, 2015

In the short term, there’s problems. Long range, things will be OK for the Waipahu and Pearl City football programs. Due to players who have been deemed academically ineligible, two upcoming nonleague football games have been downgraded to scrimmages — Pearl City at Castle, and Waipahu at Kailua. Both contests, which would not have been included in the league standings if played, were originally scheduled for Aug. 7. Instead, Pearl City will visit Castle for a 9 a.m. scrimmage on […]

Football assistant Saturnio spreads aloha

By Nick Abramo on June 16, 2015

It’s from nearly two years ago and doesn’t fit the strict definition of “newsworthy,” but it’s still worth sharing this video of former Waipahu football head coach Sean Saturnio when he was an assistant coach at Georgia Southern. In the video here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-YGehtz–A), Saturnio is being interviewed by a reporter and answers questions about the Eagles, a Football Championship Series squad. The questioning turns to his use of Hawaiian words such as “pono” and “aloha.” All of a sudden, though […]

Waipahu hires Carvalho as football coach

By Paul Honda on January 9, 2015

Bryson Carvalho has been gone for less than a year, but Waipahu High School truly missed him. So much so, that when the head coaching position for the football team opened up, Carvalho, 30, applied and was hired. “Serving as head coach at my alma mater has been a dream of mine for a long time,” he said. “I’m just really excited and blessed that I have the opportunity to serve and give back to my school and community.” Carvalho, […]

Kahuku gets to the end zone

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 23, 2014

The statistics might be credited under “scoring offense,” but Kahuku’s defense and special teams have contributed a chunk of the Red Raiders’ point total two games into the season. Kahuku scored in all three phases against Kapolei in its OIA Red opener and again on Friday in a 51-10 home win over Waipahu. Kahuku returned a fumble for a touchdown and Kesi Ah Hoy took a kickoff back 94 yards in the Red Raiders’ 26-0 spurt on their way to […]

Video: Waipahu vs. McKinley

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2013

The Marauders like their black flag. They like to hike it up after a victory. A win over McKinley would’ve qualified as a big win, but it wasn’t to be.
