VIDEO: FB scrimmage season begins on Oahu

By Nick Abramo on July 28, 2016

Waipahu visited Mililani for a football scrimmage last night as the two Central Oahu teams unofficially kicked off a new season. Both teams had success moving the ball on each other and both teams emptied the benches to give playing time to the second- and third-stringers. The Marauders will be moving down to Division II this year. The Trojans, after having lost a wealth of talent to graduation, are working on their new identity and getting up to speed for […]

Waipahu and Pearl City to get FB upgrades

By Nick Abramo on July 28, 2016

Waipahu and Pearl City won’t be playing their home games on campus this football season. The sacrifice is well worth it, though. Both the Marauders’ and Chargers’ football stadiums are getting major upgrades, with Fieldturf and eight-lane tracks that meet Hawaii High School Athletic Association standards. Waipahu and Pearl City will play their home games at Aiea. “It’s long overdue, but worth the wait,” Waipahu head coach Bryson Carvalho said. “They were waiting for the rail work to be finished […]

Waipahu showed marked improvement in ’15

By Nick Abramo on October 10, 2015

Waipahu improved in 2015 under first-year head coach Bryson Carvalho, but it might be hard for the casual observer to notice because the Marauders finished the season with the same 1-7 record from 2014. But the improvement is measurable on both sides of the ball: 2014 average score — Opponents 41, Waipahu 7 2015 average score — Opponents 36, Waipahu 19 The result of any football game from Pop Warner to high school to college to the NFL looks a […]

No. 4 Kahuku takes it to Waipahu

By Brian McInnis on September 26, 2015

Maybe the entire scoreboard should have been blacked out. Only the score was displayed on Waipahu’s board on Friday night against No. 4 Kahuku — no clock — so there was little else to look at besides the rapidly ballooning lopsided tally rung up by the Red Raiders. Kahuku rolled up 417 yards of offense exclusively on the ground as the Marauders were powerless to stop them in the trenches, resulting in a 63-0 rout. It was five points off the […]

Simanu ties Waipahu record

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 5, 2015

Waipahu receiver Andrew Simanu matched a 20-year old school record with a 249-yard performance in Waipahu’s 60-34 loss to Kaiser on Friday night. Four of Simanu’s 12 receptions went for at least 35 yards and he caught touchdown passes of 50 and 13 yards while pushing his season totals to 542 yards and four touchdowns in four OIA Red games. Simanu’s night tied Neal Gossett’s 249-yard game against Waiakea set on Aug. 25, 1995. He caught touchdown passes from backup […]

Tom’s triple-threat performance powers Kaiser

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 5, 2015

Nicolas Tom appeared a bit winded after crossing the goal line for the final touchdown of Kaiser’s 60-34 win at Waipahu on Friday night. Hard to blame the Cougars’ triple-threat for being a little leg weary after scoring in all three phases to help power Kaiser (1-3, 1-2 OIA Red) to its first win of the season in a game that ended 10 minutes before midnight. Tom started at quarterback and cornerback and returned kicks for the Cougars. He completed […]
