Ugly win? Waianae will take it

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 28, 2013

Waianae coach Daniel Matsumoto called it an “ugly” win. But at this point in the season, aesthetics don’t mean much. “We’ll take anything,” Matsumoto said with relief after the Seariders held off Kapolei in a 35-27 win Friday night at Raymond Torii Stadium. Waianae finished the regular season at 4-2 in the OIA Red West, good for second in the conference with Campbell and Kapolei (both 3-2) right behind. Waianae has a bye next week, and whether the Seariders have […]

Kapolei, Waianae have a lot to play for

By Billy Hull on September 26, 2013

When No. 8 Kapolei meets No. 6 Waianae on Friday night at Raymond Torii Field, there won’t be any kind of special trophy on the line. That doesn’t mean the two schools haven’t developed a little bit of a rivalry. Waianae is 8-4 against Kapolei since the Hurricanes fielded their first football team in 2002. Playing in the OIA White Division its first two seasons, Kapolei took on Waianae in the preseason both years, splitting the two meetings. In fact, […]

Pupule’s ballot: Voters catching up to Pupule

By Paul Honda on September 24, 2013

Mililani is moving up in the Star-Advertiser Top 10 poll, which means I’m ahead of the curve or just prophetic. Or just lucky. After all, even a broken clock is right twice a day. Polls, of course, are not about predictions. Mililani simply looked to me like the second-best team in the state for some time — since Kamehameha’s loss to Punahou, to be precise. Didn’t really seem that way, though, while the Trojans were down 21-7 to Campbell at […]

Pupule’s ballot: Guess who at No. 2

By Paul Honda on September 19, 2013

Still some video to edit, but I’m squeezing this in. For the first time in weeks, we have virtually no debate about who is No. 1 in the islands. But I can’t help wondering just a bit about how good Mililani really is. They gave Punahou a serious battle in Week 2, a closer game than Kamehameha gave the Buffanblu. Even Lahainaluna, despite its lack of strength of schedule, has been impressive defensively. A dominant rushing attack. A dominant defense. […]

Video: #6 Waianae at #8 Campbell

By Paul Honda on September 17, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 Waianae played well, played better than Campbell for more than a half. But the Sabers never quit. They clawing and clawing until they got the biggest break of the game.

Update: Campbell 32, Waianae 24, final

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2013

4:58 p.m. Nothing like beating traffic and getting situated early. The old pressbox at Campbell is open after a one-year hiatus. Always good for old reporters to take cover in case the rain falls. That would mess up the notebook, laptop and video camera. Expecting a good battle between No. 6 Waianae and No. 8 Campbell. Two savvy, talented and mobile quarterbacks against stellar defenses. Varsity kickoff is in about two-plus hours. 7:34 p.m. Final score of the JV game […]

Pupule’s ballot: Still 1a and 1b

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2013

This may seem manic or chaotic or just wishy-washy, but here goes. I voted Kamehameha No. 1 on my ballot for the Star-Advertiser Prep Football Top 10 this week. Yet, I expect Punahou to win on a last-minute field goal against the Warriors tonight. Say whuhhh… It’s like this. The Warriors, my opinion, have proven to be worth of the top spot by virtue of five wins, almost all against elite competition. Punahou deserves the spot, too, but until we […]
