VIDEO: Aiea at Waianae

By Paul Honda on October 14, 2014

Aiea was a decided underdog in the opening round of the OIA Division I playoffs, but rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to take a 20-14 lead. However, Na Alii couldn’t find a solution for Jurick Valdez. The fullback bolted up the hash marks for three long touchdown runs as the Seariders rallied for a 42-26 victory.

OIA Division I playoffs bound to be riveting

By Nick Abramo on October 6, 2014

There were some highly entertaining, eye-opening regular-season finales in OIA Division I football last weekend, giving fans one last look before the playoffs start Friday. Kahuku proved it does indeed have a workable passing attack and it made all the difference in a 28-15 win over Waianae. Farrington followed with a 29-27 win over Campbell. Senior quarterback Tuli Wily-Matagi, who went through some early season struggles, looked poised in leading the offense that desperately needed a good showing after two […]

LIVE BLOG: Kahuku 28, Waianae 15

By Billy Hull on October 4, 2014

With storm clouds hovering over Aloha Stadium, it seems like the perfect weather for another Waianae-Kahuku clash. Kickoff will be at about 5:30 p.m. as the junior varsity games beforehand ran late. Waianae gets the ball first and immediately loses 15 yards on a bad snap that QB Ioane Kaluhiokalani can’t handle. Waianae manages a first down on third-and-14 as Kaluhiokalani finds John Barbieto for 14 yards. Seariders punt on fourth-and-1 from the 38. Let’s see what Kahuku has on […]

Spencer steps up for Waianae

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 27, 2014

While University of Hawaii receiver/punter/punt returner Scott Harding takes the weekend off, Waianae’s Stanton Spencer stayed busy as a multi-purpose threat on Friday. Like Harding, Spencer does double duty on offense and special teams for the Seariders and the senior contributed in both phases to help Waianae roll past Waipahu 43-0 on the Marauders’ homecoming night. Spencer accounted for 19 points with two touchdown receptions, a 37-yard field goal and four PATs. Four of his kickoffs went for touchbacks and […]

Waianae has opposing offenses seeing blue

By Nick Abramo on September 23, 2014

Waianae’s defensive front seven is an imposing group, and it manhandled Castle in the second half of a 21-13 win on Friday in the school’s homecoming game at Raymond Torii Field. Every time players like senior defensive ends Nayton Kuresa and Maika Koko and senior linebacker Justice Jardine step on the field, opposing quarterbacks better watch out. And it would be unwise for opponents to ignore middle linebacker Jaylen Gonzales, who was all over the field against the Knights, abruptly […]

Waianae won’t quit

By Nick Abramo on August 30, 2014

With two losses now, it is doubtful No. 9 Waianae will maintain its spot in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 when the new rankings come out Monday. The Seariders made a gallant comeback Friday night at Raymond Torii Field, but were outclassed 46-27 by No. 8 Leilehua (3-0, 3-0). Despite constant hassling by its defensive line, Waianae (1-2, 1-2 OIA Red) had no real answer for Leilehua’s clockwork offense. And the pressure the Seariders put on three Mules quarterbacks was […]

Waianae enjoys the long ride

By Billy Hull on August 22, 2014

Much has been made of the new divisions in the OIA this year. For the first time since the old red-white-blue relegation system that died in 1995, schools are not aligned based on geography, which is why Waianae made its first trip to Kaiser in more than 35 years on Friday. The ride home was made just a little easier after a 26-7 victory that ended Kaiser’s 14-game winning streak. Already in an 0-1 hole after losing to Moanalua last […]

LIVE BLOG: Waianae 26, Kaiser 7

By Billy Hull on August 22, 2014

Kaiser got its wish in the offseason when it moved up into Division I after crushing the competition in winning the 2013 Division II state championship. Now the Cougars, coming off a 52-7 win over Aiea, face their first big test in visiting Waianae for a clash at Kaiser Stadium. The Seariders, who lost 30-23 to Moanalua last week, haven’t played the Cougars at Kaiser Stadium dating back to the 1970s. Waianae has won nine of the last 10 meetings, […]
