Tokunaga to retire as Waianae athletic director

Glenn Tokunaga will go from adminstration of sports at Waianae to watching his kids play more often. Sports has been the name of the game for Tokunaga for a long time, and he won’t have to do as much planning now that he will be retiring as the Waianae athletic director. Waianae’s Tanielu has 13 D-I football offers

The Division I football scholarship offers are coming in fast for former Waianae defensive tackle Handsome Tanielu, according to Scout.com. Tanielu, who graduated from Waianae in 2010, played most recently at Snow College in Utah. Thirteen Division I schools have presented a scholarship offer to the 6-foot-2, 310-pound Tanielu — Boise State, BYU, Fresno State, Houston, Kansas, Louisville, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Penn State, Tulsa and Utah State. Another nine schools have shown interest.

Walter Young is the new varsity football coach at Waianae High School. Young is a 10-year member of the coaching staff, including the last two as junior varsity head coach. “We really wanted to hire somebody in house,” athletic director Glenn Tokunaga said. “He’s been through the system. Daniel Matsumoto, who spent the last 15 years as Waianae’s head football coach, is retiring according to athletic director Glenn Tokunaga. Matsumoto went 92-70 in 15 seasons with the Seariders and guided them to a state final in 2010, losing 36-13 to a Marcus Mariota-led Saint Louis team. Matsumoto went 11-2 in his first season in 2000 but failed to win an OIA title in his tenure. The Seariders’ last OIA championship came in 1997. The Seariders were 5-4 this past season, […]
