Waianae runs its way to another big win

By Billy Hull on August 14, 2016

Turns out it was all just a tease. That Waianae four-wide passing attack on display in the second half of a season-opening win against Kamehameha was stashed away Saturday night in Kapolei. Instead, it was back to the traditional Seariders’ triple-option rushing attack that left Kapolei gasping for air. In a matchup of teams ranked in the top five in the state, the fourth-seeded Seariders established themselves as the biggest threat to Kahuku’s OIA crown with a 35-14 thumping of […]

Saturday marks the first time the Hurricanes and Seariders play each other when both are ranked in the top five. No. 4 Waianae knocked off previous-No. 4 Kamehameha to open the season last Friday and can complete a rare back-to-back sweep of top-five teams. VIDEO: ‘Sledgehammahs,’ war clubs enter scene

By Nick Abramo on August 8, 2016

Darren Hernandez walked sternly on to the Kapolei football field when the stadium announcer gave the fans a nod that the team was heading out of the locker room. He was immediately followed by linebacker Tyler Vasega holding a huge sledgehammer over his shoulder and walking a proudly like Paul Bunyan holding his ax. A few seconds later, the rest of the players ran single file out to the field to warm up for their game against Campbell. By the […]

Little things lead to big plays for Waianae QB

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 6, 2016

Jaren Ulu showed a willingness to absorb punishment in the pocket throughout No. 8 Waianae’s spectacular second-half duel with No. 4 Kamehameha on Friday night. The Searider quarterback wasn’t shy about delivering a blow either. Before slinging the decisive touchdown pass in Waianae’s breathtaking 26-20 opening-night win at Kamehameha’s Kunuiakea Stadium, Ulu’s turn as a lead blocker helped spark the Searider offense late in the third quarter. Both defenses controlled the action through the game’s first 31 minutes and Waianae […]

Star-Advertiser Preseason Top 10 Countdown Today: No. 8 Waianae It came from just about everyone at practice on Wednesday. Head coach Walter Young talked about it. Quarterback Jaren Ulu was excited for it. Players from the Waianae and Kamehameha football teams joined forces for a public service project recently. The Warriors and Seariders, along with head coaches Walter Young of Waianae and Abu Maafala of Kamehameha, worked on a cleanup at Maili Beach Park in Waianae on July 14. “It was just us two teams teaming up before we play our preseason game (Aug. 5 at Kamehameha),” Maafala wrote in a text to Hawaii Prep World. Added Young: “We cleaned up rubbish and […]
