GAME NIGHT 8/26: Waianae/Kahuku

By Hawaii Prep World on August 26, 2016

Five games on Oahu Friday night are highlighted by the showdown up North between the top two ranked teams in the OIA. Live updates of the 7:30 p.m. kickoff will follow below: No. 1 Kahuku 28, No. 4 Waianae 0, FINAL FOURTH QUARTER Kahuku shuts out Waianae for the third time in two years. I don’t think Waianae ran a play in Kahuku territory the entire game. Final: No. 1 Kahuku 28, No. 4 Waianae 0. GOOD NIGHT. Kesi Ah-Hoy […]

Kahuku vs. Waianae: The Crunch Bowl?

By Billy Hull on August 24, 2016

At one point in history, Kahuku and Waianae had combined to win 11 consecutive OIA titles. The Red Raiders have won more OIA championships than anyone else — 24 to be exact. Next on the list? Waianae with 18. Some will say it’s hard to call it a rivalry when Kahuku has won 15 consecutive meetings, but the atmosphere at Carleton Weimer Field on Friday night when the fourth-ranked Seariders face the top-ranked Red Raiders will definitely show otherwise. Kahuku versus […]

Waianae defense simply taketh away

By Paul Honda on August 20, 2016

Absurd, perhaps, to consider that two mere turnovers against a defense like Waianae’s could mean so much. After all, Moanalua’s Alaka‘i Yuen passed for a respectable 218 yards and connected with Ryan Ramones and Brandon Bender for a total of three touchdown passes. That just doesn’t happen much against a vaunted Searider defense with knockdown artists like Kanai Mauga — the guy with the recent scholarship offers from Oregon State and Hawaii. But yes, Unbeaten, No. 4-ranked Waianae (3-0, 2-0 […]

GAME NIGHT 8/19: Moanalua/Waianae

By Hawaii Prep World on August 19, 2016

Six games on Oahu are scheduled for Friday night. The OIA enters the first week of divisional play after the seven cross-division matchups last week, plus there’s a very intriguing Division II game at Leilehua featuring two teams that might see each other again in the state tournament. Moanalua has done its best to be balanced offensively. QB Alakai Yuen and backup Ezra Grace have accounted for 53 of the team’s 54 pass attempts after two games. Moanalua’s running backs, […]

Waianae’s Rosario gives added zest to backfield

By Nick Abramo on August 18, 2016

Senior Javen Towne has been lugging the football out of the Waianae varsity football team’s triple option for three years now. He’s a tough customer. He can plow up the middle. The 5-foot-8, 190-pounder can also use his speed and moves. Then there’s senior Jorell Pontes-Borje (5-9, 175), another person in the fourth-ranked Seariders’ backfield who we in the media have written and talked about for the past three years. Speedy, elusive, can catch. It gets deeper, with plenty of […]

Wednesday recruiting update

By Billy Hull on August 17, 2016

Hawaii High School Football Recruiting Tracker A couple of recruiting tidbits. Waianae’s Kanai Mauga, a junior defensive end listed at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, told me Sunday that he has received a scholarship offer from Oregon State. Mauga was a beast against Kapolei last Saturday. He completely blew up the right tackle blocking him on the Hurricanes’ first two passing plays and was then double-teamed for most of the game. He had a tipped pass at the line and also got […]
