PREP FOOTBALL COUNTDOWN: No. 5 Waianae

By Paul Honda on July 30, 2017

One of the constants of Leeward Oahu has been and probably always will be Waianae football. From the Pee Wees of Pop Warner (Waianae Tigers) on up to the high school, there’s a certain consistency and tradition, coaching and community pride, that is all part of the time-capsule brand of teamwork that endures. But there’s always something unexpected with high schoolers. Rico Rosario, a bedrock of stability on the offensive side of the ball, nearly upset the cart when he […]

Rosario chooses Waianae over Liberty

By Nick Abramo on May 30, 2017

Rico Rosario, one of the top running backs in the state, made a huge life decision last week. He chose to remain at Waianae for his senior season rather than move to Nevada with his family and play at Liberty High. Rosario will be staying with his grandmother. His parents — Shane and Sunny Rosario — and two younger brothers ages 9 and 6 moved to the Las Vegas area Friday. “I was supposed to go and play for Liberty,” […]

Waianae’s Lutu-Clarke at ease with decision

By Christian Shimabuku on February 1, 2017

Waianae’s Onesimus Lutu-Clarke is setting out to make the very most of his collegiate experience. The first step toward that was signing with Oregon State on Wednesday morning to make his commitment official. He chose the Beavers because of the environment within and beyond the locker room. “It had to be the family-oriented atmosphere that they had there,” Lutu-Clarke said. “I realized how strong of a bond they had with each other and how coach (Gary) Andersen plans to use […]

Oregon State adds another commit from Hawaii

By Billy Hull on January 22, 2017

First Oregon State got Kahuku’s Kesi Ah-Hoy to open up his recruitment after committing to Hawaii. Then it got Leilehua’s Charles Moku Watson to commit after he had originally pledged to Washington State last summer. Now the Beavers are adding some beef to their offensive line from Hawaii with the commitment of Waianae’s Onesimus Lutu-Clarke. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Clarke, who participated in the inaugural Polynesian Bowl at Aloha Stadium on Saturday night, made his commitment public on Twitter tonight. Committed […]

Crusaders’ defense could close the deal

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2016

Offense has taken Saint Louis quite far. Defense by the gentlemen of Kalaepohaku could close the deal. Clearly, and abundantly, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the offensive unit have provided ample push toward that beautiful koa trophy waiting to be taken home by this year’s state football champion. But right now, getting out of the semifinal round of the all-new, old-school-tenacious Open Division of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Championships isn’t about aerial delights alone. It takes sound defense. Consistent, physical, […]
