Waialua still in hunt despite loss

Missed opportunities hurt Waialua in a 26-7 loss to Waipahu on Friday. But even with the loss, the Bulldogs remain in the running for one of four OIA Division II playoff berths. Waipahu (5-1, 4-1 OIA D-II) and Kaimuki (4-2, 4-1) remained a half-game behind leader Pearl City (4-1, 4-0) with their Friday wins. After Waialua had stunningly taken the lead on a fourth quarter safety, Bulldogs senior Lancen Kuni had one thing on his mind as he dropped back to field the ensuing free kick. “Don’t fumble,” he said. “Don’t drop the ball, don’t muff it. Another matchup of top-10 teams highlights the five-game slate Saturday on Oahu. In OIA-DII action, Kalani travels to Waialua to take on the Bulldogs. The Falcons picked up the first win of Scott Melemai‘s tenure in an exciting 26-22 win over Kaimuki last week. Waialua also played a thriller against Kaimuki, losing 22-20 in overtime in its season opener. Six games are on tap Saturday night on Oahu while both St. Francis and Kamehameha hit the neighbor islands for nonleague contests. Two teams making their season debuts clash tonight in the OIA D-II opener for for both Kaimuki and Waialua. The battle of the Bulldogs takes place at Kaiser Stadium with a 5 p.m. kickoff.
