Homecoming queen doubles as statistician

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2017

A few minutes before the McKinley at Waialua football game on Friday night, the Bulldogs’ homecoming queen arrived in the press box and took a seat near the public address announcer. Maybe she was going to give notes to the announcer to read at halftime while the homecoming court is introduced. But no. Lea’a Puleiala took a pen and paper and a scoresheet and started taking stats. “Are you in the court or are you the queen,” a reporter asked. […]

Streak over: McKinley wins first game since 2013

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2017

Sophomore quarterback Alexandria Buchanan has been getting the headlines the last few weeks for the McKinley Tigers, and she did her job once again Friday night managing the game. But it was a bunch of players around 250 pounds who got it done while the 125-pound girl with the ponytail handed it off with little fanfare as the Tigers broke through for their first win since 2013 to break a 29-game losing streak with a 22-0 road win over Waialua. […]

Waialua will play 2 games on home field

By Nick Abramo on September 12, 2017

The Waialua Bulldogs have been on the road all football season so far. But they’ll be playing at home soon. Earlier this season, newly planted grass on the Bulldogs’ field had yet to take a good enough hold. The grass is looking good now, according to athletic director Bryce Kaneshiro, and the school got two thumbs up from the Department of Education to play two home games. This Friday, Waialua’s game against McKinley will be in Waialua instead of at […]

GAME NIGHT 9/8: Waialua/Waipahu

By Hawaii Prep World on September 8, 2017

The Marauders had won 16 of the last 17 meetings against the Bulldogs until Waialua pulled off a 36-35 shocker at Aloha Stadium last year to win the OIA Division II state title. This is the first meeting since and while Waialua has lost nearly all of its firepower from last season, the Waipahu is in great shape to get back to the D-II title game again this year. WAIALUA BULLDOGS (0-4, 0-3 OIA D-II) Head coach: Lincoln Barit Bulldogs […]

Waialua’s Hatchie embraces peaks and valleys

By Paul Honda on September 3, 2017

Kalani handled its business and Waialua is smiling through the tears. The Falcons’ 33-0 win over the defending OIA Division II champions on Saturday at Skippa Diaz Stadium wasn’t surprising, not with a Bulldogs squad that is young and lacking the girth and physicality of recent seasons. But with a string of lopsided losses, the rest of the prep football galaxy is realizing what the ‘Dogs knew long ago: the road to last year’s championship is one less travelled. For […]
