Waialua back in playoffs for first time since ’06

By Nick Abramo on October 11, 2015

The Bulldogs are back. Waialua lost its football finale to Radford, 35-0, on Friday, but still qualified for the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II playoffs when Nanakuli defeated Kalani 22-6 on Saturday. Both the Bulldogs (5-4 overall) and the Falcons finished at 4-4 in the league, but Waialua won the tiebreaker for the fourth seed due to a 21-16 victory in the head-to-head matchup with Kalani on Aug. 14. Wow, talk about early-season games meaning something! And now the fourth-seeded […]

Nanakuli hoping for a lot of Sunshine

By Jerry Campany on September 3, 2015

Despite a week of heavy rain around the islands, Waialua coach Lincoln Barit has probably seen his share of sunshine. Barit spent the week preparing his Bulldogs for a clash with reigning OIA White champion Nanakuli. The Golden Hawks have weapons all over the field, but none of them are as important as running back Sunshine Anuenue. Anuenue is averaging 120.5 yards per game in his last two contests after being bottled up by Kapaa in the opener. The Golden […]

Waialua completes win over Pearl City

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 24, 2015

After Waialua improved to 3-0 for the first time since 1993, Bulldogs head coach Lincoln Barit was understandably a bit emotional. Barit’s team overcame a 12-point deficit against Pearl City on Saturday to take a 14-12 lead before the game was suspended due to lightning early in the fourth quarter. When play resumed on Monday, the Bulldogs extended the lead only to have Pearl City charge back to jump ahead 23-20 with 4:36 left. Waialua quarterback Royce Tashiro then led […]

Pearl City-Waialua game suspended

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 22, 2015

After Waialua scored an electrifying go-ahead touchdown in Saturday’s OIA Division II game at Pearl City, lightning in the area forced the suspension of the contest at the Chargers’ field. Pearl City coach Robin Kami said he was informed the game is scheduled to resume at 6 p.m. Monday with Waialua leading 14-12 and 10:59 left in the fourth quarter. So the teams will gear up again Monday afternoon and Waialua will make the drive from the North Shore to […]

Good news outshines the bad at Waialua

By Nick Abramo on August 14, 2015

There’s good news and bad news for the Waialua football team. We’ll start with the bad: the Bulldogs will not have a junior varsity team this season due to a lack of players. But, all is not lost. The Waialua varsity team (1-0) has a healthy 53 players on the roster going into Friday’s 6 p.m. Oahu Intersholastic Association Division II matchup at home against Kalani. Varsity head coach Lincoln Barit said Thursday night that he wishes the Bulldogs could […]

Waialua to forfeit all junior varsity games

By Nick Abramo on August 13, 2015

Waialua will not be fielding a junior varsity football team this season, and all of its scheduled games have been forfeited, Oahu Interscholastic Association football coordinator Harold Tanaka told Hawaii Prep World on Thursday. Tanaka did not give a reason for the forfeits, but judging by Waialua’s low participation numbers for varsity and JV football, it’s likely due to a lack of numbers. Bulldogs varsity head coach Lincoln Barit and athletic director Bryce Kaneshiro could not be reached for comment […]

Authentic football at Waialua

By Nick Abramo on September 8, 2014

Waialua is doing something right. You want real football? Go there. No, it’s not 750 yards of passing with glitzy uniforms and an artificial turf field. This is real grass, and clouds of dirt actually do rise when the players hit the ground. There are no JV games, so the varsity starts at 6 p.m., giving everyone plenty of time to go home and relax and unwind before going to bed. Like some other football fields on Oahu, there are […]

Video: Waialua vs. Anuenue

By Paul Honda on October 11, 2013

Waialua’s turnaround since the start of the season has been remarkable. Anuenue, after many years as a very competitive Division II program, has struggled mightily this season.
