VIDEO Q&A: Kealakehe 1st-year head coach Wyatt Nahale

By Paul Honda on June 21, 2019

The hiring of Wyatt Nahale as Kealakehe’s new football coach could spark the Waveriders this fall. Kealakehe was a dominant program for years, but hit a lull in recent seasons. Nahale was the junior varsity coach at Konawaena last season, a longtime assistant coach who also brings six players, including son and quarterback Shayden Nahale, from the Wildcats. All six are residents of the Kealakehe district, and if Nahale and his staff regain momentum for the Waveriders, it could mean […]

By Paul Honda on June 15, 2019

Sure, it’s 7-on-7, where there is no pass rush. Where Saint Louis, with the state’s best pass rushers, can’t line up and tee off. Yet, it was Waipahu’s tremendous defensive force, Fiva Tulafale, who stepped up in a 28-22 win over the Crusaders at the Los Angeles Rams 7v7 tournament on Saturday. So many questions. Hilo won the Division I state title in 2017 and finished second in ’18. Lahainaluna is a three-time D-II state champion, and Kapaa was the D-II runner-up. “It was too good an opportunity to pass up,” Drummondo said. […]

HILO, Hawaii >> Brian Derby is nationally recognized as one of the premier offensive line gurus, but he will never say no to coaches in the islands.
