Kahuku’s Tomasi Pasi makes the play that gets the Red Raiders into the state final

By Paul Honda on November 22, 2019

This was not the usual night for Tomasi Pasi. The junior defensive back came up with the play of the game with 16 seconds left and Kahuku clinging to a 21-19 lead over Campbell. The Sabers had just scored on a remarkable 24-yard touchdown pass from Blaine Hipa to Titus Mokiao-Atimalala. On the ensuing two-point conversion attempt with 16 seconds remaining, Hipa scrambled and hurled another pass to Mokiao-Atimalala, who had just received three college scholarship offers within the past […]

By Paul Honda on November 22, 2019

In-game highlights, Kahuku vs. Campbell, First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Open Division State Championships, semifinal round. Titus Mokiao-Atimalala playing limited snaps due to injury. No Bubbah Aina-Chaves (ineligible). But WR Zavier Ceruti, who shined at the UH Football Camp last summer, is channeling his inner Ashley Lelie. Despite a torrent of penalties, Kahuku finds the end zone on this tough 10-yard run by Zealand Matagi. A short Campbell punt, after a pass interference call was waved off, gives Kahuku good field position. […]

Victory begins in the trenches for Saint Louis’ stonewalling defense

By Paul Honda on November 20, 2019

The question is more theory when defense face Saint Louis. How can anyone keep Saint Louis’ high-powered offense from scoring? Take one weapon away, and the Crusaders find another way to exploit the weakness. Sometimes, the best defense is an offense, one that can slow the game down. Lower the possession counts. Keep quarterback Jayden de Laura and his offensive teammates on the sideline. Nationally-ranked Bishop Gorman tried. The Gaels finished with 98 yards on 21 rushing attempts in a […]

VIDEO: Punahou’s Tati Burciaga-Reyes, Kona’s Caiyle Kaupu come up clutch in McKinley tourney

By Paul Honda on November 18, 2019

Down by one point, Punahou patiently worked the ball against Kahuku’s zone before junior Tati Burciaga-Reyes splashed a corner 3 with 1.2 seconds left. Punahou edged Kahuku 41-39 and finished 3-1 at the Matsumoto Law Group Black & Gold Classic. The Konawaena Wildcats began the week with eight players, but after two injuries, were down to six players in the second half against ILH powerhouse Kamehameha. Caiyle Kaupu sank a jump hook in the lane with 5 seconds left to […]

The art of breaking in brand-new, state-tourney footballs

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2019

Jaymason Lee has a specific rule about new footballs: don’t let the kickers mess with them. Savaii Eselu trusts his steel brush with them. Every year, each head coach at the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships is allotted three new footballs to use. No other balls are permitted. This year, instead of receiving the new, slick balls on game day, they were distributed to coaches on Sunday at the HHSAA’s coaches meeting. That gives teams at least five days […]

VIDEO: Coaches spent mini-break on date nights, family time

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2019

The short break between the league playoffs and the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships gave coaches and players a bit of down time. Nerdpod: The unique talents of Damien QB/hoopster Jake Holtz

By Paul Honda on November 5, 2019

He could be the tallest quarterback in Damien history. Jake Holtz, at 6-foot-3, close to 6-4 and 215 pounds, has been more than a statuesque passer from the pocket. Holtz’s passion and toughness make him a playmaker unlike the usual signal-caller. His athleticism makes him a threat on the basketball court, too, where he has the hops to play in the post, but has the skill level to play in the backcourt. Whether he chooses one sport or both in […]
