By Nick Abramo on May 3, 2019

Six runners went lower than 11 seconds in the 100-meter dash trials at the Island Movers/HHSAA Track and Field State Championships on Friday at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, Maui. The half-dozen speedsters were led by Saint Louis’ Roman Wilson, who ran a personal-best 10.70 seconds. That time tied for the best in Hawaii so far this season with Seabury Hall’s Noah Payne. Wilson’s Crusaders teammate Keola Yadao was two hundredths of a second behind in 10.72, and he was […]

By Nick Abramo on April 29, 2019

The Kamehameha-Hawaii junior won four individual events at the BIIF championships Saturday and placed second in another. Frederick won the 100-meter dash (12.73 seconds, with a qualifying time of 12.57), high jump (5 feet, 1 inch), long jump (16-10.50) and triple jump (38.4.25), and she was the runner-up in the 200 (26.16). A year ago, Frederick set three BIIF records — long jump (18-4.25), […]

By Nick Abramo on April 25, 2019

Moanalua junior Rashod Tanner won three events at the OIA track and field championships last weekend. But it was only part of a whirlwind and sad yet uplifting week that took him to Temecula, Calif., and back in between Thursday’s trials and Saturday night’s finals. Tanner’s grandfather died the week earlier. The funeral date was Friday, leaving Rashod to decide what to do. “Rashod was willing to do whatever to work for his family and his team,” said his father […]

UPDATE: Hawaii track and field has 12 new best marks of 2019

By Nick Abramo on April 24, 2019

This period of time in Hawaii track and field is the equivalent of moving day in golf. In golf, it’s the third of four rounds, when it’s time to raise your game in anticipation of a possible victory. In track and field, it’s the few weeks before the state championship meet (May 3-4 at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, Maui), when everybody is putting in their best efforts nearing the end of a long and grueling months-long process. That is […]

Radford OIA record-breaker Michael Edwards is no longer ‘average’

By Nick Abramo on April 23, 2019

Radford track and field sprinting coach Sid Patton tells a good story about one of the Rams, senior Michael Edwards. Edwards broke the OIA championship meet’s 300 hurdles record Saturday with a time of 39.02 seconds in a winning performance. But, Edwards’ encouraging speech to his team recently is just as impressive, and it underscores what effort and perseverance can do for anyone who tries. “He told the team the other night, ‘Hey, I was just an average guy when […]

High marks set at OIA track and field championships

By Nick Abramo on April 21, 2019

You win some and you lose some. And so it went for some of the state’s best track athletes Saturday night at the OIA championship meet in Mililani. For Campbell’s Leilani Leopard, it was two wins and two close second-place finishes. McKinley’s Narayana Schneider won the 1500, but did not run in the 800, where Kaiser’s Nicholas Georgia surpassed Schneider’s best previous Hawaii time of 2019. Mililani’s Mackenzie Reed remained red hot, winning in the 200 and 400 meters, but […]

Saint Louis’ 4×100 relay team makes ILH meet history

By Nick Abramo on April 20, 2019

Everybody in Hawaii track and field circles knows the Saint Louis 4×100 relay team is fast as a unit, but they are doing a lot individually, too. The squad — Roman Wilson, Keanu Wallace, Korvin Feagins and Keola Yadao — ran the event in 42.11 on Saturday at Kamehameha to set a new ILH championship meet record. It’s also the best time for Hawaii in 2019, and it is better than Punahou’s 42.18 from last year that set the state-meet […]

Kamehameha’s Tanner Moku makes statement in 300 hurdles

By Nick Abramo on April 20, 2019

When people think boys hurdles statewide this year, they think of Rey Cadiz of Baldwin. But Kamehameha’s Tanner Moku is turning heads and dropping jaws, too. Moku ran a 37.99 seconds in the 300 hurdles to win the ILH championship Saturday at Kamehameha. Not only is it the best for Hawaii in 2019, it’s also better than Dana Navarro-Arias‘ 38.10 for Maui High in 1999 that still stands as the state-meet record. Nobody, not even Moku, saw this coming. “That […]
