Hintnaus helps Hawaii pole vault renaissance

Six Red Raiders sign letters of intent

Volleyball standout setter ShaRae Niu was one of six Kahuku seniors who signed their letters of intent on Wednesday. Niu signed with Hawaii-Hilo. Teammate Carey Williams signed with the University of Portland. Cheyenne Te’o signed with Notre Dame de Namur. Williams and Niu finished back-to-back in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Fab. 15 this past season with Williams at No. 10 and Niu one spot behind. Lehl, Wilson win track events in California

The Punahou track and field team will be bringing some gold back from its weekend in California. Reigning state cross country champion Connor Lehl ran a 4:24.72 to win the 1,600 meters at the Mustang Relays in Mira Costa, Calif., on Saturday, closing with a 2:03 in the final 800 meters to earn the win. O’Handley, Norbrey MVPs at Yamamoto track

Kaiser’s Kristen O’Handley picked up this year’s track and field season where she left off last year. O’Handley, who won the 100 and 200 and chipped in on a relay win at last year’s state championships, won two individual events and was in on two relay wins at Saturday’s Yamamoto Invitational at Mililani. Baldwin’s Anthony Kahoohanohano-Davis is the Gatorade Hawaii Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year, the Gatorade Company announced Friday. The award recognizes athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the track. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior won three individual titles, set two state records and anchored a victorious relay at the state championship meet in May. Hawaii Prep’s Emma Taylor is the Gatorade Hawaii Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year, the Gatorade Company announced Thursday. The award recognizes athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the track. Taylor, a 5 foot 6 senior, won the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.79 seconds and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 45.82 at the state meet in May, leading Ka Makani to the team championship.
