Q&A: Kaiser vaulter/hurdler Tommi Hintnaus

By Paul Honda on May 10, 2017

Vaulting into the air is an act in defiance of the laws of gravity that most humans don’t participate in. For Tommi Hintnaus, it’s in her DNA. The Kaiser senior, who will be at Arizona State this fall on an academic scholarship, ranks first statewide in the pole vault with a personal record of 11 feet, 7 inches as the Island Movers/HHSAA State Track and Field Championships nears. At Keaau on Friday and Saturday, she and teammate Juliette Lum, the […]

Q&A: Kaiser pole vaulter Juliette Lum

By Paul Honda on May 10, 2017

The pressure is off, possibly, for the state’s No. 2 pole vaulter. Juliette Lum of Kaiser is just a junior, and her personal record of 11 feet even makes her a contender for the gold at the Island Movers/HHSAA State Track and Field Championships in Keaau. Coach Kevin Kruszona considers six, maybe as many as eight vaulters in the running for first place in the vault, with Kaiser senior Tommi Hintnaus (PR 11-7) as a solid favorite. But conditions at […]

By Stan Lee on May 9, 2017

Entries are out for this weekend’s Island Movers/HHSAA State Track and Field Championships at Keaau High School. Kaiser senior Kristen O’Handley has the top qualifying marks in the girls high jump (5 feet, 5.25 inches), 400-meter dash (58.05 seconds) and 200 (25.30). O’Handley won the 100 and 200 last year. Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Saydee Aganus is the top qualifier in the girls 100 hurdles (14.34) and 100 dash (12.29). O’Handley has the second-fastest time in the 100 (12.31) while Aganus has the […]

Q&A: Kaiser track athlete Kristen O’Handley

By Paul Honda on May 9, 2017

She’s busy enough, but seems to thrive on the nonstop life of being a Kaiser scholar-athlete. Breaking records and competing in as many as six track and field events is par for the course in the life of Kristen O’Handley. She even added the shot put and long jump to her resume — qualifying for states in the latter — but will focus on “only” six events at the Island Movers/HHSAA State Championships this weekend at Keaau High School’s facility. […]

Campbell’s Leopard on prowl in track

By Nick Abramo on May 3, 2017

Remember the name Leilani Leopard. Not hard to do, since the Leopard in the animal world is known for its fast running and jumping and leaping of great distances. And hunting. Leilani Leopard, a sophomore track and field athlete at Campbell, has some of those physical characteristics. And she is constantly hunting better times and distances. Leopard medaled in six events at the Oahu Interscholastic Association championships Saturday at Pearl City, and of the six, they were in the three […]

Graduation or states? Mililani’s dilemma

By Nick Abramo on May 1, 2017

Mililani track and field seniors face a difficult choice. Go to their graduation on May 13 or run in the state meet. The team has known for months about the conflict, and coaches Nate Aragaki and Dane Matsunaga have left it up to the individual to decide what’s best for them. The Trojans’ victory on the boys side in the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship meet Saturday complicates matters a bit, but the team is taking it in stride. “Winning the […]

OIA track: 2 Kaiser girls to compete in college

By Nick Abramo on May 1, 2017

It’s been quite a ride for two Kaiser girls track and field standouts. The Cougars’ Kristen O’Handley has a scholarship offer from Portland State, and teammate Tommi Hintnaus will walk on to Arizona State. Both were part of Kaiser’s fourth straight OIA team title Saturday at Pearl City’s brand-new track. O’Handley had a huge night, breaking the OIA championship meet record in the high jump (5 feet, 5 1/4 inches), winning the 100-, 200- and 400-meter runs and taking part […]

ILH track notes: an extraordinary relay bond

By Nick Abramo on April 29, 2017

They might need a name for their band soon because they’re playing some solid music on the track and field stage. It’s Punahou’s 4-x-100-meter girls squad. And here they come to the big stage. The girls – juniors Alialani Yamafuji and Kealoha Scullion, and sophomores Stevie Marvin and Kaylie Klausing – continue to improve and who knows how far they can take it. A year ago at the state meet, they ran to first place in 50.64 seconds. In the […]
