The Maui High unified team blazed to victory in two events at the Island Movers/HHSAA Track and Field State Championships on Saturday. The Sabers’ Jerimiah Abut, Edwin Hayman, Gavin Gilon and Waiohinu Cuello won the 4-x-100 relay and the 4-x-400 relay in front of the cheering and packed crowd at Kamehameha’s Kunuiakea Stadium. Once in a while, you learn highly interesting things that you weren’t expecting. Such was the case Saturday night. Walking out of Kamehameha’s Kunuiakea Stadium, Punahou pole vault coach Tom Hintnaus was spotted heading the same way. Frederick, Cadiz set records at track state meet

Two records fell on the first day of the Island Movers/HHSAA State Track and Field Championships at Kamehameha on Friday. Kamehameha-Hawaii sophomore Chenoa Frederick broke her own record and took the gold medal in the triple jump. Her 39-foot, 10-inch jump eclipsed the 39-8 state mark she set last season. Punahou’s Iosivas breaks 3 ILH track records

Punahou senior Andrei Iosivas is trying to end his season with a bang, and he has already begun to do so. Last Saturday at Kamehameha, Iosivas broke three ILH track and field title meet records. Punahou’s Yamafuji sets Hawaii pole vault mark

Punahou’s J. Kai Yamafuji pole vaulted higher than anyone in Hawaii history on Wednesday, according to his coach Tom Hintnaus and ILH track and field coordinator Jeff Meister. Yamafuji, a sophomore, cleared 16 feet. A bit earlier, he had made 15 feet, 3 inches as did rival and defending state and ILH champion Logan Rubasch of ‘Iolani. Damien’s Padron runs to Gatorade award

Damien’s Christian Padron was named the Gatorade Hawaii track and field athlete of the year Thursday. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the track. The 5-foot-9, 152-pound Padron won the 100-meter dash with a state-record time of 10.63 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 21.97 seconds at the same meet, leading the Monarchs to third place as a team.
