Ilagan: Generation of Governor greats

By Paul Honda on May 4, 2016

Even the most casual tennis fan may have gathered this about Andre Ilagan, Farrington’s sophomore sensation on the tennis court: He’s a fairly quiet guy surrounded by folks who love to talk about him. As much as his coaches and dad, Sergio, had to say about the 3.5-grade point average student-athlete, it was impossible to fit all of their thoughts into one feature story. So here’s more. From scratch to title town Sergio has been a local cornerstone, a font […]

Farrington’s Andre Ilagan completed his sweep in the OIA tennis championships on Saturday, sweeping Kalani’s Darrell Huang 6-1, 6-3 to repeat his run. Ilagan is the first Farrington singles champion since his brother Mark took the crown in 2004. Anthony, another brother, won two titles before that. Jace Akagi-Okuma and Davin Lee teamed up to take the boys doubles title with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Rayden Murata and Koby Murata of Kalani. On the girls side, Pearl City […]

By Nick Abramo on June 12, 2015

Punahou is juggling its tennis coaching staff, according to Buffanblu athletic administrator Tom Holden. Betsy Somerville Purpura is the new girls tennis coach, and coach Ikaika Jobe will move from the girls team to the boys team, Holden told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World on Friday. For Jobe, it will be a tough act to follow. He replaces Rusty Komori, who retired recently after winning the last 22 boys state championships (during the streak of 25 by the […]

Hall Pass: Kawika Lam

By Jerry Campany on June 6, 2015

It seems like Punahou never loses in tennis, mostly because of athletes like Kawika Lam. Lam won three singles titles and a doubles crown in his four years of prep tennis and for that will be inducted into the Enterprise / HHSAA Hall of Honor on June 7 at Dole Cannery Square’s Pomaikai Ballroom. The Punahou boys tennis team won its 25th straight state title this season, with 12 individual champions and 16 doubles champions during the span. That’s a […]

By Jerry Campany on May 14, 2015

The Campbell tennis team didn’t have many stars this year, but the one they had was the brightest. Zion Heaven was named the OIA West’s player of the year in voting of coaches on Thursday. Heaven was the only Saber honored on the first and second teams. Mililani took four spots on the first team and Pearl City took two. Aiea had the other one. The Trojans swept the rest of the OIA West awards, with Haley Fujimori being named […]

Komori is most proud of building character

By Nick Abramo on May 12, 2015

Punahou’s Rusty Komori took the varsity boys tennis coaching job in 1994, and since that time, he never learned what it was like to finish second or worse in the state championship. That’s 22 years of leading the talent-laden Buffanblu to the Hawaii title. That’s what you call supremacy, and for whoever follows Komori in the job, that’s a tough, tough act to follow. It might seem like an easy thing to do. Punahou gets great athletes in all sports, […]
