By Paul Honda on February 2, 2021

The National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) has removed tiers from its recommended guidelines regarding COVID-19. The NFHS wrote: “Two of those factors are that prevailing community infection rates appear to be the strongest predictor for high school athletes being infected, and proven cases of direct COVID-19 transmission during athletics remain relatively rare. “The other recommended factors to consider are that participants in non-contact sports show lower rates of COVID-19 infection than those in contact sports, participants in outdoor sports show lower rates […]

JAN 3, 2002: Leo Sing Chow and other ILH aces throw gems

By Jerry Campany on January 3, 2021

On this date in 2002, a no-hitter in softball was no big deal. Punahou’s Sarah Weisskopf and Nicole Cazinha of Sacred Hearts threw abbreviated no-hitters, Ioneta Lei of Iolani shut out University and Kamehameha’s Leo Sing Chow yielded just one hit in a win over a Pac-Three team. The aces weren’t limited to pitching excellence as all but Weisskopf paired hits. Wiesskopf struck out 10 batters in her no-hitter and walked only one. Cazinha didn’t allow a walk but had […]

By Paul Honda on December 30, 2020

Confidence in high school sports is fairly high for air riflery, Cross country, baseball, esports, golf, softball, tennis and track and field — despite the ongoing challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hawaii Prep World polled dozens of coaches in spring and postponed fall sports. Twenty-two of them responded over the weekend — before the ILH made an announcement about cancellation of five winter sports. Coaches from the OIA, ILH, MIL and BIIF participated in the voting. Postponed fall sports […]

Starting date for non-contact football workouts still uncertain

By Paul Honda on September 18, 2020

Football coaches across the state are asking, and there is still no definite date for the re-start of high school football practice. All they know is, there is hope if the number of new cases of COVID-19 can decrease significantly as the state implements mass testing. There are ifs aplenty across the board. If schools reopen in October, then air riflery and bowling may be able to start on schedule. The chances are “good,” Hawaii High School Athletic Association Executive […]

Pac-12 teams scouting Maryknoll’s slugging shortstop, Nelly McEnroe-Marinas

By Paul Honda on September 16, 2020

Nellian McEnroe-Marinas’ high school coach compares her to Jocelyn Alo. Her club coach in California calls the sophomore a Top 10 player nationally. No matter the praise, family and friends call her Nelly. She misses her teammates and classmates at Maryknoll as Hawaii remains in COVID-19 lockdown. “I don’t like online (classes) that much. It’s harder to focus sitting in front of a computer screen because of distractions,” McEnroe-Marinas said on Tuesday. “One-hundred percent, it’s my phone. I do shut […]
