OIA West continues to dominate softball rankings

By Paul Honda on April 24, 2018

For a second week in a row, the Campbell Sabers are the No. 1 team in the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10. Today’s balloting revealed status quo for the top four softball teams from last week’s poll, the first time all season those positions were static. Campbell (16-5-2, 9-3 OIA West) collected six of 11 first-place votes from the panel of coaches and media. Leilehua (12-4, 9-3) finished in a first-place tie with Campbell in the OIA West, but garnered just […]

OIA softball playoffs begin Wednesday

By Billy Hull on April 22, 2018

The West No. 1 seed Campbell Sabers enter the OIA tournament as the three-time defending state champions. However, the Sabers haven’t won an OIA title since 2013. Mililani, which has won three of the last four OIA Division I softball titles, is the defending champion and opens the tournament Wednesday in a must-win game at Kailua to keep its season alive. Defending OIA Division II champion Aiea is the No. 3 seed this year behind Kalani and Waialua. McKinley will […]

St. Francis completes ILH mission

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 17, 2018

St. Francis wanted to prove it could compete with the best in ILH softball, regardless of division designation. Consider that box checked with a big blue Sharpie. The seventh-ranked Saints pulled out a 6-5 walk-off win over No. 5 Maryknoll on Tuesday to clinch at least a tie for the best record in the ILH’s first round. St. Francis, one of just two ILH Division II teams, closed the combined schedule at 9-3 and won both of its meetings with […]

No. 1 and No. 2 finish tied in OIA West

By Paul Honda on April 17, 2018

The offseason road from Maryknoll to Leilehua was unexpected, but satisfying for Kamryn Kamakaiwi. The fire-balling southpaw came through in a big way on Wednesday, firing a two-hit shutout in Leilehua’s 11-0, five-inning win over No. 10 Mililani. That gave Leilehua a 9-3 mark and a share of the OIA West softball regular-season title. The Mules enter the playoffs ranked No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 while being second, according to the league tiebreakers and seedings, in the […]

Leilehua softball takes it to Pearl City

By Brian McInnis on April 16, 2018

It was all sunshine for Leilehua softball on Monday. Career days from two players — senior pitcher Kaena Nistal and shortstop Jacelyn “Lovey” Kepa‘a — carried the No. 2 Mules to a 12-0 five-inning rout of No. 9 Pearl City at the Chargers’ field. The game was made up from a rainout. All considered, it was an impressive showing from Leilehua (8-3), which suffered a 6-5 comeback defeat to its top-ranked rival, Campbell (9-3), last week. Now the Mules play […]

Lady Sabers return to top spot

By Paul Honda on April 16, 2018

After one week at the top of the totem pole, the Kapolei Hurricanes have been bumped off. Three-time defending state champion Campbell has usurped the throne in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 released today. The Sabers opened the season at No. 1 and are now at the coveted position for a fourth time in a dizzying storm of a season in prep softball. Campbell (16-5-2, 9-3 OIA West) swept through a crucial week with a 6-5 win over […]

Roosevelt repeats as best in OIA East

By Christian Shimabuku on April 14, 2018

Roosevelt came out victorious in a winner-take-all softball matchup against Kaiser on Saturday night, winning 8-4 and taking with it the top seed in the OIA East heading into the playoffs that start on April 25. The Rough Riders (11-1) won their second matchup against the Cougars (9-3) in a rain-shortened 5-inning game at McKinley, avenging a 6-4 loss at Kaiser on March 20. “A win is a win,” Roosevelt coach Kris Fujii-Dias said. “Postseason is what matters, so we […]

Domingo, Sales help Sabers walk off against Mules

By Paul Honda on April 10, 2018

’Tis the season of offensive forces throughout the leagues of softball. Pitching as a whole seems steady, but far from dominant. The cycle goes up and down, and coaches are hoping their underclassmen can rise to the challenge. Third-ranked Campbell got a memorable effort from sophomore Chloe Sales on Tuesday in a 6-5 comeback win over No. 2 Leilehua. It was quite the splash for the Sabers. The matchup with Leilehua had been postponed twice due to soggy conditions. Though […]
